Top 10 Walking Tours in Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna

September 24, 2021 Giuseppe Pratt

Ravenna once was the capital of the Byzantine Empire in Italy, and it still has amazing mosaics recalling that heritage. Also make sure you visit Dante's tomb, as well as the little pile of rubble where local residents hid his urn during WWII to prevent it from being damaged.

A friend and I spent a three hour private tour with Elisa, going through key Ravenna historical sites. The sites have been impressive, particularly inside of the churches, as I found them to be more spectacular then elsewhere in Emilia Romagna. I particularly enjoyed the private chapel of a bishop, situated inside the museum which was the last stop on our tour. Elisa is not only knowledgable and competent, with a great command of English, but also curious, smart and socially intelligent lady who gave us a good look in not only Ravenna history, but also its present through an interesting conversation and a few laughs. Well worth your time and money.

Cinzia is a fabulous guide. She’s extremely knowledgeable about the many aspects of the amazing mosaics of Ravenna and Classe, as well as about the history surrounding them. She explained everything very clearly and was able to answer my numerous questions. All of this, combined with her generosity, warmth, and passion for her work, made my day with her unforgettable. The mosaics are so rich with detail and symbolism that having a strong guide is a must in order to fully appreciate what one is seeing. Cinzia was able to bring to life these stunningly beautiful, unique, and historically significant masterpieces. Cinzia is also quite knowledgeable about other artifacts of the period. For example, she was able to translate the inscription on the sarcophagus of a young child, a poignant expression of the parents’ deep sorrow. Visiting the wonderful sites of Ravenna and Classe was a true privilege for me, and all the more so with Cinzia as my guide. The experience will stay with me for years to come.

I’m Roman, I was born here and I live here. I was quite skeptical when I friend of mine literally dragged me to this guided tour of the main touristic spots in the center of Rome. We spent 3 hours between Colosseum and Campidoglio. Damn!! It was great. Vincenzo is a Tour Guide and a storyteller at the same time. He is professional but his tale, full of details and curiosities, will really involve you and bring you back in the Ancient Rome. I do really recommend it.

Several populations estabilished on the sandy Adriatic coast. Take part in our guided tours that will take you on a pleasant walk along the main streets of the historic center of Ravenna to discover the most evocative and significant corners, famous people, anecdotes, food and wine and street art. A guided tour that starts from the Tomb of Dante Alighieri, and then deepens the rich heritage of the city, of which the 8 Unesco monuments are only the flagship. Ravenna with its basilicas, baptisteries and mausoleums tells us about a glorious past as a protagonist, in which it was capital 3 times. Entering the historic center, small buildings adorned with portals, mullioned windows, balconies and arcades, testify to the building renovation carried out during the Venetian domination. Not to mention the fact that for centuries, Ravenna welcomed illustrious people who were profitable poets and ingenious revolutionaries in these lands. So much so that even today Ravenna continues to be a source of such great inspiration.
