Saadani is where the beach meets the bush. The only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa to boast for an Indian Ocean beachfront, it sounds too far fetched to be true – an epic safari adventure filled with scenic Savannah, verdant bush lands married with calm beaches absent from tourists. This description may sound like the stuff of dreams, but here in Tanzania’s Saadani National Park, it is the reality. Yet it is also the one place where those idle hours of sunbathing might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or a lion coming to drink at the nearby waterhole!

We received a written email stating that we would get picked up at the hotel and dropped off at the Dar es Salaam airport at the end of the safari. This transportation was to be included in the overall price. Also, we were to have all meals and activities included in the safari price, and the package was to include a safari hat and t-shirt. Well, the night before, we discovered that only one meal per day would be covered. We shrugged and went ahead anyway. At the end, the guide (Baracka Kimambo) said when we got to the airport that we would have to pay $10 each for a snake park we visited, $20 each for a lunch we had in Mikumi Park, and an incredible $50 because we were brought back to the airport instead of the original hotel in Dar es Salaam (not that far from the originating hotel). Sincere there were seven us in the group, this was a substantial amount of money! We felt as though we were being swindled by a guide whom we had gotten to know and like over the past three days. All this just minutes after we had given him a $210 cash tip! Not a good feeling. Not knowing what to do, we paid the extra money. Then, at the airport, we decided to call the director (Rodgers Bajungu), who was very nice and was apologetic. He directed Baracka to return to the airport and give us the money back, which he did. For some reason, we let him keep the tip. Unpleasant ending to an otherwise good trip.Oh, and by the way, we never got the promised hat and t-shirt.....

Saadani National Park is truly unique because it’s right on the Indian Ocean. The beautiful white sand beaches are stunning but you’re more likely to see lions or elephant on the beach than sunbathers. A wide range of grazing animals are commonly seen on game drives and walks through Saadani National Park. These include giraffe, buffalo, warthog, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, greater kudu, eland, sable, yellow baboon and vervet monkey along with herds of elephant and many other creatures of all sizes.

We Spent about an hour trying to spot animals and when we saw them it came of sudden. Elephants, warthogs, buffalos, monkeys, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, different antelopes, various birds, hyenas and lions!! Our guides have a huge knowledge about the nature and to find different wildlife. They stop whenever the tourist wants to take a picture on any animal. The flight to Selous was great too...Great experience!!!!

We Spent about an hour trying to spot animals and when we saw them it came of sudden. Elephants, warthogs, buffalos, monkeys, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, different antelopes, various birds, hyenas and lions!! Our guides have a huge knowledge about the nature and to find different wildlife. They stop whenever the tourist wants to take a picture on any animal. The flight to Selous was great too...Great experience!!!!

Towards the south of the park the Wami river provides the boundary line and source to bountiful fresh water. In the hills lies one of the last remaining lowland coastal forest left in Africa, Zaraninge. Our experience in Tanga and with the Tanga Cultural Tourism Enterprise (CTE) was incredible. Imani, our tour guide, was so welcoming when we arrived. He gave us a brief history of the area and highlighted the different programs and tours offered in the area. The first day we were taken on a walking tour of the city. Not only is it a beautiful city that lies next to the Indian ocean, everyone is so friendly and the streets aren't crazy busy, giving the town a relaxed feel. We tried out some coconut wine at the local bar and then ended the tour at Imani's house, where we were lucky enough to share a meal with him and his family. The next day, we went on a bike tour to the Amboni Caves and the Sulphur Hot Springs. Because Tanga is relatively flat, the bike ride was super relaxing, allowing us to take in the sights and city. The Amboni Caves are absolutely stunning and the tour throughout the cave was filled with humour and information about the caves. The next part of the bike ride was through scenic fields, ending at the vibrant blueish green sulphur spring. Through all of this, Imani taught us so much about each attraction as well as the surrounding area. We went back to Imani's families house for lunch, where we went through the entire process of making pilau. This was definitely a highlight for me. It's a lot of work but the end result is delicious! After lunch, we headed to the museum, where we learned about Tanga's history and the German occupations of the area. We ended the evening off with a bike ride down by the ocean. Tanga is a place that should absolutely be on anyone's list when coming to Tanzania. Imani and the Tanga CTE were incredible and we can't thank them enough for our incredible experience in Tanga.

10. 2 Days/1 Night - Saadani Fly-inn Safari from Dar-es-salaam/Zanzibar
Saadani National Park is “Where the Bush meets the Beach” Miles wide beach and untamed wild forming bond is an exceptional view that will bring your eyes out of your socket. Sadaani National Park does that literally. Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a well-preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani game reserve, the former Mkwaja ranch area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest. The only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the sea, Saadani village itself once was an important harbor-town and slave-trading centre in East Africa. Nowadays it is a small Swahili village of about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing. Bird watchers will be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore.

We had such an amazing experience on this trip! We really enjoyed the private car with fridge and rooftop and we saw so many animals in the national park. Our tour guide Gaston was a real highlight, so knowledgeable, polite, friendly and really wanted to ensure we had the best time and maximised our time driving inside the park. Finding the most unique places to stop for lunch. Our flights got changed by the airline a month before arriving and so we had to move everything including this safari forward by a day and this was easily altered by the company without complaint. The value of this trip was outstanding which included private vehicle, park passes, accommodation and food. The visit to see the local people was certainly unique and interesting. We were also lucky to be the only people at the hotel (Tan Swiss) and had the pool to ourselves! The evening meal there was amazing, huge portions. We felt safe at all times even though the national park has no boundary so at any point animals can be seen everywhere in the local area but there were security on site! We had a night either side in Dar Es and followed this trip with a 6 night stay on Zanzibar and found it to be the perfect length between safari and island time. I could not recommend this trip more!
