Shrouded in mystery until quite recently, the ancient city of Tiwanaku is still far from being completely excavated and surveyed. Evidence suggests the area around the site was inhabited as early as 1500 BCE. As the settlement grew to city size it began to influence surrounding areas. As a city-state, it blossomed between 300CE and 1000CE, after which it declined due to changing weather patterns which resulted in less rainfall. Although much of the site was disturbed by looting, which began soon after Tiwanaku’s decline, it is possible to observe the high level of sophistication and skilled stone working, that were characteristic of Tiwanaku during its height. Join this 8-hour tour and discover Tiwanaku and Titicaca in one day.

Inclusions: Tiwanaku tour presented in English or Spanish, Hotel pickup and drop-off (please include a hotel when booking!) , Lunch (Please specify meal restrictions when booking!), Transport by air-conditioned minibus

Exclusions: Hotel pick-up outside of La Paz, Gratuities, You may request pickup from Zona Sur hotels for an additional $20USD

If you are looking to experience the incredible beauty of Bolivia in a fun, diverse and safe adventure, I would highly recommend Solace Trekking and Tours. Caleb is a fantastic guide who is well-equipped and has great knowledge of Bolivia's culture, history and geography. He is American and Bolivian and was born in the US, but has lived in Bolivia with his family for many years. He is fluent in English and Spanish. He has many trips he runs on a regular basis, but he is also able to tailor the trips to your liking and skill level if you select a private tour. My parents and I did a full-day hiking trip in the Tuni Condoriri Laguna Chiar Khota and many other alpine lakes. Kunturiri (Tuni Condoriri) is a mountain in the Cordillera Real of Bolivia in the countryside outside of El Alto. It was a trip that Caleb hand selected for us as we described we wanted a very scenic hike in the mountains with many alpine lakes. Collectively between the three of us, we have been to some of the most beautiful parts of the world, and we all agreed that the beauty of Bolivia was one of the most gorgeous places we have traveled to. Caleb was able to pick us up at our hotel and provide transportation for us. He provides a fantastic lunch/picnic. He is also more than excited to share his knowledge of the history of Bolivia. Caleb also knows his way around La Paz, a city where traffic is can be very unruly. He was able to get us home safely after there were blockade in the road during a protest in El Alto because he knew the back roads through El Alto and La Paz so well. I would highly recommend Caleb as a guide, and I would highly recommend traveling to Bolivia to see its beauty. We definitely planning on returning.

Here visitors can explore traditional villages where Spanish is the second language and where ancient myths and beliefs persist even today. One of the peculiarities of Lake Titicaca are the small floating islands inhabited by a tribe called the Uros. It was a bit confusing with my booking due to the miscommunication between the operator posting this tour and the operator actually providing the tour (they were different!). But I managed to sort it out by messaging and a phone call. Despite the drama in the beginning, it was fun! They provide you with everything you need and teach you how to "climb" the ice. For a person spending the most time at sea level and not used to rock climbing, this was very challenging for me. But I had a blast! I will come back to have more! Ice climbing is at 4900 meters above the sea level, so take it easy to avoid altitude sickness.
