Xanten was the furthest most town on the Roman/Germanic borders of the Roman Empire. The town was aligned to a Roman fort guarding the frontier. The reconstruction is fascinating and well presented. It is well worth visiting.

The church is undergoing some more reconstruction work. The original from 1544 was destroyed at the end of the Second World War. Like so many other historical cities along the river Rhine Xanten was hit badly by the allied forces. I wonder how these decisions about bombing churches were taken and by whom?
Viktor von Xanten after whom the church was named, was a Christian rebel for the anti-Roman cause. Nowadays other Christian resistance fighters against the Nazis are honored in the crypt.

Pleasant ambiance of terraces, cafés, restaurants and bakeries. Very many Germans having coffee with 'Kuchen' on a historic city square. People are friendly and respectful, also when they are in a group.
Xanten is 38 km from Terborg, the nearest railway station in the Netherlands where bicycles can be rented. A nice loop is Terborg - Wesel - Xanten - Rees - Netterden - Terborg 106 km through the Rhine valley. It took me just over 7 hours (including visits to several sites). OV rent bikes do not have gears, but it turned out not to be a problem as the whole route is more or less flat.

I'm a Canadian, but I worked in the bakery, just for room and board, in 1990, for a month. Such a great experience. Best bread in the world, and a slice of quaint, old, German life when they did everything by hand, hauling sacks of grain up with a rope and pulley. The boss is a great guy, too. He might still be there. Rolf. A master baker, a gentleman and a scholar, to be certain.

We stayed in this tower for two nights as part of a family weekend. The rooms can be rented through the tourist office about 200 meters from the tower towards the main square. We rented the bottom apartment as we have a small baby and the only way to get up is through the narrow spiral staircase in the little adjacent tower.
The rooms are all well furnished with everything one would need. I do think a bit more attention could have been paid to some of the furniture and the kitchen and bathroom as they do not really fit the setting. The kitchens and bathrooms are all functional but are quasy-modern, whereas it would be more appropriate to put some more traditional fittings in a medieval tower such as this.
But we were overall extremely comfortable here and had a great weekend. The location of the tower is fantastic and in the middle of the city. Everything within Xanten is within walking distance from the tower.
I will definitely recommend the tower and Xanten to anyone that would like to visit the region.

Museum area was huge. We spend there 3 hours and still we couldn't see everything. There was the main museum and other buildings that were explaining how romeans build their houses. There was also archeological findings that they have found in the area. Place was worth of visiting.

Bislich ist ein Ortsteil der Stadt Wesel, und liegt direkt am Rhein.
Ein kleines Dorf, das auch eine Fähre über den Rhein, nach der Stadt Xanten, zu bieten hat, die nächsten Brücken gibt es erst wieder in Wesel oder Rees.
Bislich liegt am Naturschutzgebiet - Rheinaue, und ist über dem Deich und über die Wiesen und Felder, ein Fahrradfahrer - Paradies.
Die kleine Bislicher Dorfkirche, Sankt Johannes, ist vom Umfeld um die Kirche, durch seinen Schatten spendenden Kirchgarten,
der liebevoll gestaltet, und für jeder man zugänglich ist sehens und er-lebenswert.
Im heißen Sommer, bietet der Kirchgarten, für die die es wissen, eine Schatten spendende Oase, mit Sitzgelegenheiten und Ausblick in die Natur.
Vom Kirchgarten, kann man das Storchennest, das sich seit Jahren in der unmittelbaren Umgebung befindet, mit seinen Aktivitäten beobachten.
Eine schöne Sitzgelegenheit, mit Aussicht Auf das Storchennest, gibt es in diesem Kirchgarten, das ist mein Tipp, den ich gerne weitergeben möchte.
Die meisten Fahrradfahrer, befahren oben die deich - Krone.
Doch im Kirchgarten, ist man den Störchen viel näher, man muss es nur wissen, das es diese Möglichkeit gibt.
Die Kirche von innen betrachtet, ist ebenfalls sehenswert.
Klein, aber fein, so könnte man es mit einfachen Worten ausdrücken.
Aber für kirchlich - interessierte, ist hier geschichtlich, viel mehr zu sehen.
Der schlichte Eindruck, beim Betreten der in dezenten grau gehaltenen Kirche,wird beim Zugehen auf dem Altar, immer interessanter.
Der Altar - Raum, ist das Schmuckstück dieser Kirche, der Altar, ist ein Blickfang für den Betrachter, da gibt es viel zu sehen.
Überhaupt, die ganze Ausstattung, dieses Altarraumes, hat schöne Schnitzereien zu bieten.
Die Orgel, ist passend für diese Kirche, klein aber sicherlich hörenswert.
Farblich passt die Orgel gut zum Gesamt - Bild von dieser Kirche.
Ich habe mir diese Bislicher Dorf - Kirche, ganz genau angeschaut, und finde wenn man mit dem Fahrrad durch das Naturschutzgebiet fährt,
sollte man immer an diesen schönen Ort eine Rast einlegen.
Mein spezieller Tipp:
Ein paar Hunder Meter die Dorf Straße runter, zum Hotel - Restaurant - und Backstube " Haus Poot" hier kann man gemütlich im Hinterhof
vom Gasthof " Haus Poot" innen oder im Garten - Restaurant, Essen und Trinken.
Sonnenschirme, spenden Schatten, das Essen und die Bewirtung ist prima.
Die Bedienung, im Haus Poot, ist die gleiche wie im Becker - Laden, und hat nach einem von mir erdachten Bewertungs System ***** bekommen.
Wir holen uns immer im Bäcker - Laden der Familie Poot, belegte Brötchen, meine Frau schwärmt von dem geräucherten Schinken, ich begnüge mich mit Käse.
um die 1,50€ für ein belegtes Brötchen vom Lande, das nehmen wir jedes mal für uns in Anspruch, das gehört immer zum Besuch von Bislich dazu.
Nicht selten Essen wir unser hier gekauftes, dann mit schöner Aussicht, im Kirchgarten von Sankt Johannes.

This great, large park shows a number restorated as well as in style built copies of Roman buildings such as Xanten looked like long time ago. The main building is possible the Arena copy as well as some tools such as cranes and Catapults. Also the replica' s of horse cars etc. are interesting to see. There is also a big museum building where the original foundations of the Roman buildings can be seen as well as many tools, kitchen equipment, art work, weapons, etc. In the summer weekends and holiday periods handcraft work is shown as well as the Roman way of baking bread. The bread can be bought, quite tasty. Worthwhile and interesting to visit! 4/5

sehr schönes und vielfältiges Freizeitzentrum, schöner Badestrand mit vielen Attraktionen, von SUP Paddeln, Windsurfen, Wasserski und mehr kann man sich nach Herzenslust austoben; im Sommer oft diverse Musicals und Musikabende!

Потрясающее приключение для всей семьи - снаряжение и входной билет для взрослого около 20 евро, а для семьи примерно 50 евро. Инструктора немного говорят по английски, но вообще все будет интуитивно понятно.
