Whittier (/ˈwɪtiər/) is a city in Southern California located within Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a population of 85,331, reflecting an increase of 1,631 from the 83,680 counted in the 2000 Census, and encompasses 14.7 square miles (38.0 km). Like nearby Montebello, the city constitutes part of the Gateway Cities. Whittier was incorporated in February 1898 and became a charter city in 1955. The city is named for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier and is home to Whittier College.

Hsi Lai Temple encompasses 15 acres and a floor area of 102,432 square feet. The temple's Ming (1268-1644 C. E.) and Ching (1644-1911 C.E.) dynasty architecture is faithful to the traditional style of buildings, gardens and statuary of traditional ancient Chinese monasteries. Hsi Lai means "coming to the West" and signifies the dedication of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order to spread the teachings of the Buddha to those in the West. The International Buddhist Progress Society, a nonprofit organization, is the chartered name for the temple. Hsi Lai Temple was built to serve as a spiritual and cultural center for those interested in learning more about Buddhism and the Chinese culture. It is the idea of Venerable Master Hsing Yun to propagate "Humanistic Buddhism" and to create a Pure Land here on earth. Hsi Lai Temple is built to fulfill these goals in the United States. This place brings so much positive energy. The building mimics the forbidden palace in China with the style of Chinese Ching Dynasty design. There is a front shrine (They called it "Bodhisattva Hall") and a main shrine. Many people didn't know there is another shrine after the front Bodhisattva Hall and totally missed it. Make sure you go pass the walkway by either side of the Bodhisattva Hall which leads you toward the courtyard where you will see the main shrine.

The park is several acres of historic building, a train, and a recreated Tongva village. The ruins of the former ranch house sits about the center surrounded by a water tank, conservatory, aviary, carriage house, and smaller buildings. Intermixed are gardens and it is a popular place for local works to enjoy lunch. In a corner is a railroad exhibit including a locomotive, refrigerated car, and caboose along with a small station and other buildings and a rose garden. The Tongva village sits at a lower elevation behind thick vegetation making it feel more like it might have hundreds of years ago. Across the street is a sculpture garden leading off to a commercial development.
The main park is open most of the day, but the Carriage Barn and Railroad Exhibit are open 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm., closed Monday and Friday and major holidays.

Whenever Cerritos residents have guests the library is the Number Three tourist attraction after Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. The award-winning Cerritos Library is owned and operated by the City.
The Children's room is outstanding having the giant aquarium as its front wall. They have their own dinosaur named 'Stan' and a group of computers to use. It's a great place for the kids.
next to the Front Desk is the media room, with a great selection of CDs and DVDs. There is an "Internet Station" where you can check your email, or do a brief search.
Upstairs by the stacks is a bank of computers to use for study for research -free.
They also have a group of 'Study Rooms' that can be reserved in advance. If you have a group study project you can use one of the rooms and not disturb the other patrons.
The library also houses a great art collection and a special event room on the top floor. The Skylight room also has a roof-top patio,

The La Mirada Theater is in a shopping center that gets very crowded on weekends, but there is free parking(but a lot of the spaces were striped badly, with no room for a car!) There are two separate entrances, so make sure you know where your 'will call' tickets will be or you will have to walk around the building. At intermission, be ready for long, long, long lines at both the men's and ladies' rooms. The seats were comfortable and even the balcony had a good view.

We have visited Legg Lake Park and the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area numerous times. This time we visited on a Friday and there were lots of people there. The weekends are even more popular.
There are peddle boat rentals on Legg Lake. There is also fishing.
There is places to walk and jog. There is also place to ride bikes.
There are numerous large parking lots. By each of the parking lots is nice picnic areas.
There is also a very fun sculpture by the lake they are restoring; it looked like it was in the final touches. So cute to see.
Its also a good area for bird and geese watching.
The park is accessible by car, bike, or bus.

Came here to do a photo shoot, so my perspective may be a little different. Spent about an hour prior to the shoot walking around to scope out sites and I have to say this place is incredible in terms of size and diversity. Did...MoreJeremiah.....thanks for your comments. The photo-shoot was awesome. Lots of great models, photographers, poses, and energy. Hope to see you again soon since you didn't get to explore the other floor.

Went with hubby, youngest son, his fiancee and our grandson (from our daughter) who is 4 years old. Hubby and I sat under an umbrella and watched as grandson was taken through the whole attraction by his uncle and aunt to be. They have life preservers for everyone to use (free). Two specific areas insure that even the little kids can participate. That pool is much more shallow, but plenty deep enough for adults too. They offer a lazy river ride where you go through in inner tube type flotation devices. Water slides as well as big buckets that dump water on you are readily available. If you just want to lap swim there is an entirely separate area for that, and adults can also avail themselves of a large, in-ground spa that is gated off to keep kids out. Locker rooms are available and beautiful. Seating around the waterpark portion of the facility is plentiful with umbrella tables. Limited food and beverages are offered for purchase. Lifeguards are plentiful and do a very good job.

Parents can reserve the barnyard area for children's birthday parties. For a fee, you have access to the fenced in area with tables and the animals. Even if you aren't part of a group, you can view horses, donkeys, birds, rabbits and more exotic animals through the chain link fence. The petting zoo is $5, pony or train ride $4, merry-go-round $3 or a combination ticket for a better price. Rides are for young children, probably age 8 and younger. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. (213) 718-5442
