Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park

In the late 1800s industries in the Blackstone River Valley used this canal to transport textiles between Providence and central Massachusetts.

A beautiful, sunny 68 degree day in February made the park even better. Lots of people enjoying the trails as well as the small welcome center. We stopped at several other locations along the Blackstone Corridor and enjoyed reading the histories. A map is available in the welcome center.

Southwick's Zoo

Reviewed By Coral G - Winchendon, Massachusetts, United States

We visited the zoo on a Monday in September. It was nice and quiet. The Skyway was running so we took a ride. It was wonderful. No bumps along the way. We saw most of the park's wildlife. There's also a train, but we didn't ride it. You can feed and pet the herd of deer; there's a petting area for adorable goats; the staff provide informational sessions; there are shows. Each type of animal is explained via a board at the exhibit area. The board includes a map as to where the animal lives, the age span and size, whether the species is endangered and to what extent, and other information. The aviary is wonderful!. You can feed the parakeets. They fly onto your shoulder, or in my case, my hat. Although the zoo is not huge, it has a good variety of animals. What made an impression on me was the quality of care the animals receive. You can tell that the members of the staff really love the animals. The areas are well-maintained and clean. All animals had plenty of water and food. I look forward to returning soon.

Just one year after opening in 2010, New England golfers now have another "must play" course for their bucket list. Carved out of a majestic 146-acre tract of rolling landscape that affords sweeping views of the historic Blackstone Valley Corridor, Shining Rock Golf Club gives every level of golfer a memorable round. The par 72 course measures 6,735 yards from the championship tees and each hole offers three to five tee boxes. With an elevation change of 255 feet from the highest to the lowest point on the course, golfers are presented with some stunning holes that will be talked about for their jaw-dropping and chiseled beauty.

Have played this course many times on the last several years. Terrific service form ground personnel and clubhouse as well. The course is the meat of the adventure. The first six holes will test everything in and out of your bag. After that it is mainly a great golf course. Greens are like concrete and linoleum. Fairways are manicured. Sand traps have new sand in them this year.

Going to movies here is relaxing and very family friendly. AND their best feature is Patriots games - all season - they can't charge admission so you're only expense is snacks. They have a beer and wine license as well. AND the bathrooms are clean and convenient. I have been taking my grandsons there for years and believe me on a stormy Sunday - as we are known to have around here - there is no better option than to go to The Elm. We meet friends and family there, easy access from Rt. 20 and 146.

Such a nice place to get together! There are three water slides built into the hill- slower, medium, and faster. There are NO STAIRS TO CLIMB! Woohoo! You walk a ramp/hill to get to the top. There is a nice lake front that is shallow and buoyed off. No worries, there is no muck, just nice sand under your toes. There is a small arcade and a snack shack. However, you can bring in your own cooler of food. There are picnic tables or you can lay a blanket/beach chair on the grass. I like to play cards with my husband while the kids toss a Nerf ball. Such a nice relaxing place to go.

I was looking for something to do outside with the kids and found West End creamery. We got there right when they opened and it was already starting to get busy but, It was a beautiful day so that wasn't a surprise. We headed right for the mini golf, there was a few people in front of us but it wasn't to long of a wait. The course is 18 holes and is set up nice. They also have a bounce place for kids. It cost 4 of us $34 bucks, $8.50 ea. when we finished up, we headed over to get some of they're ice cream. We walked inside and the girl told us we can eat inside but had to order outside? O.K. ? We went back outside and the lines were pretty long. You would think they would have more people working on a weekend day that was sunny and everyone wanted ice cream, they only had a few girls working and they were pretty unorganized to say the least. You ordered the ice cream at the same window you waited for the ice cream ? I'm not sure why they didn't have a " pick up window" like most places do so that others can order, instead of waiting for the person in front of you to get they're ice cream before you could even order yours? It caused huge back ups of people and a lot of rumbling from the crowds of people waiting. They couldn't even dip my daughter's waffle cone in chocolate ? I'm guessing they ran out or something, at that point, I was just happy to get the ice cream and not stand in a line anymore, so I didn't bother to ask why. It was a nice place to go but they really need management to be on hand of the high school kids they got working for them, to move things along, no ice cream is worth waiting 45 mins for, sorry.

Nice paved walking, biking trail. Please be aware that some sections are secluded so be careful if walking alone. Also be aware that not all users follow the simple rules of the trail. Watch out for the occasional dog poop on the trail. For bikers be careful of the dog walkers with 20 foot leashes that let their dogs roam all over the trail, kids that wander back and forth across the line while their parents watch without a care, and it can also be slippery in the Fall with wet leaves. Otherwise enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of the trail.

The Andel'men have not done well by their purchase of the Mendon. Higher prices. Food and Drink Nazis. The concession stand has gone Way Down Hill.... its just not the same place and the overall quality has suffered. Unequal treatment on paying clientele, roving security that are NOT professional. Just little good to say since they've taken over.
