Rimrock Overlook

This was the highlight of our visit to the park today as it is closed in the winter time. The view is good, but the masonry work done to carve staircases into the rock and to build the railings (by the CCC?) is really neat to see as well. We didn't do the hiking trail to the beach as it was abnormally cold today.

Chapman State Park

We stayed here in our fifth wheel. We had sites 15 & 17. They were kind of together. There was a path to the water behind 15 so we carried our kayaks through the woods & left them at the water for the weekend. Very convenient.
There's a couple nice playgrounds that the little ones enjoyed. We spent one day at the beach which was fabulous.
We rode our bikes around here a lot to get to the beach & bathrooms. The bathroom & showers were super nice & clean. There's a bunch of hiking trails here but we only went on 1 with our bikes. It led to a cool bridge hanging by wires across the creek.
The store & food stand at the beach were closed while we were here.
This is a no alcohol campground. Really quiet after 10 pm. I will definitely return here!
My only complaint is they don't sell stickers for our camper!

Stopped off here in passing to take in the magnificent views and drove up to Jakes Point for the overlooks. The road down the Eastern side of the Southern arm was closed, but we enjoyed our time here nonetheless.

Jakes Rock Overlook

Reviewed By Jonathan K - Pennsylvania

We came here in February and were deterred by icy slush. We came back today to see what Jakes Rocks is all about...and failed to find the main feature. The signage is not very helpful, the visitor center was closed so no help could be had there. The only thing that we saw were 2 overlooks that featured the dam and needed trimmed back to enhance the view. Obviously there is more to this stop, but do your homework before you go so that you aren't disappointed like us!

Warren County Historical Society - Warren Historic District

Reviewed By SuperPoser - Canton, Ohio

On a recent trip with family & friends for some easy hiking and site-seeing, our first stop in the morning was the Warren Historic District.
There are many beautiful houses and buildings showing the great architecture used in the past. It was a very nice drive and short walk around the area. I am sure there is more we could have seen, but this was just a quick stop on the way to the Kinzua Bridge. The next time we are in Warren, we'll be sure to spend more time here!

Warren Antiques and Giftware

Reviewed By StarWeez - NH

This shop was changing owners, and the old sign, Second Avenue Exchange, was on the building.

My companion does extensive genealogical research on her family. As a result, she has built a considerable library of sources from Warren and Venango Counties in Pennsylvania. She is always looking for city directories, school yearbooks, old historical society newsletters, telephone directories, etc. She and I were checking out antique shops in Warren. We wandered into this one after lunch one day. At first, it looked like a home boutique stocked with items that, soon enough, wind up in yard sales.

I soon, however, spotted a shelf full of high school yearbooks, old Warren County Historical Society newsletters, city directories, and reunion programs. I beckoned my companion over to that treasure trove. She left with a huge pile of sources she did not yet have in her library. It was truly a find, and she was able to purchase this material for much less than she could via an online auction, IF the material was available at all. My companion asked one of the proprietors for a discount on the items she chose, so a phone call was made to the vendor. The discount was granted. Companion went back another day with a list of her inventory of yearbooks and found some to fill her archive in further.

There was quite a bit of nostalgic stuff in this shop, plus countless signs with smart-mouthed sayings for hanging up in your garage, man cave, hunting camp, kitchen, or mud room. I never saw so many vintage cigar boxes for sale in one place. They even had a huge, unopened can of fallout shelter survival biscuits, made by Nabisco, from the 1950s. There were dozens of other vintage food cans for sale on the shelves. There were no automobilia or license plates.

Upstairs had some worn wooden furniture, Christmas items, and some used clothing. About a third of it was empty. It appeared to be a work in progress.

It may be small, but the store is jam packed with all sorts of antiques and home decor items made from re-purposed antiques. There is also a small selection of items such as jewelry and "soft-goods" hand-crafted by local artists. The proprietor was friendly and helpful. The location is a bit out of the way, but it is worth crossing the Hickory Street Bridge and having a look. You may find a hidden treasure as we did!
