Flanders Field American Cemetery

This is the smallest American Military Cemetery in Europe (368 graves), the only one in Belgium and located conveniently just off the busy E17 at J5. The cemetery parking area and visitor building has been refurbished/upgraded - perhaps as a result of President Obama's visit. It's worth spending time in the visitor building as there's a well produced video plus personal histories of some of those interred and details of the battles fought in and around the area - most of those interred here were killed in action in the nearby woods. The focal point is the memorial chapel in the centre of the cemetery and lists 43 names of those who were killed nearby but whose bodies were never recovered. The symmetrical lay out has 92 graves in each of the four burial sections and as is the case with all American and CWGC Cemeteries the grounds are beautifully maintained and a fitting final resting place to those who "gave their all"

Frontaal Battlefield Tours

frontaal! battlefield tours : on the trail of the Great War, off the beaten paths... A long passion for the First World War, numerous reconnaissance of the Battlefields and a lot of Reading and research work resulted in 2013 in this project. 100 years later, I take interested people to the places where this horrible chapter in world history took place, and where the scars are still visible. With unique, self-edited aerial views and contemporary media, we can - more clear than ever -overlook the entire situation : where were the trenches and who was where? We walk off the beaten paths : we skip museums and the obvious monuments deliberately, but go "in the field" for a unique overview of the facts ...

In August 2015 I had the privilege of being guided by Gil. His perfect English, great knowledge and expert understanding made for a great day. We met at a prearranged place and Gil immediately made us all feel at ease.
We spent the whole day with Gil. He organised everything from food stops to a small out of the way museum that we had never heard of before. and all through the day nothing was too much trouble.
I have since met Gil on the Somme when he was with another group. The look on their faces told me that they were experiencing the same as we had a few months before.
I would recommend Frontaal! to anyone wanting to tour the Battlefields, but wanting a good guide to meet up with.

Transfo duiktank

Reviewed By RubellaFrutella - Harelbeke, Belgium

Last weekend, we made a nice dive in a new divetank, located on an old industrial site near the canal. We heard a lot about this new project, so we went there to have a look.
And yes, the site is well renovated to welcome divers and friends.
Once onsite, and after a brief introduction, we were ready to put on our own equipment and to dive into the water.
The pool (before it was an old oil tank) contains clear water (perfect visibility) and has a depth of approx. 15m. There is a platform at -3m. The water temperature is approx 16°C which is pretty comfortable. Excellent location for excercises (new divers) or to have some fun with divefriends. We did some rescue excersices and tested our new underwatercamera.
After the dive, we took a hot shower and went to the cafetaria for a drink. Because rehydration is important for divers... ;-)

Very attractive white houses in a cobbled area, which have a fascinating history of the Begijns movements . There is an interactive museum now opened which does have some information in English, although most of the exhibition is only in Flemish. There is also one house which has the inside showing how the women lived.
There is still a lot of renovation work going on all over Kortijk, but most of this area of Begijnhof St Elizabeth is now open. It is free to enter and well worth a visit . There is a cafe .
