We stopped here hoping to find a place with pullouts along the road to stop and better view the grasslands and take photos....sadly they said none existed and that you could turn off the main road and just make your own path. I was somewhat disappointed.

Loop Road

Main route through Badlands National Park.

We visited the Badlands after hearing varying reviews and decided we had to see it for ourselves. Wow we were so glad that we did! This area is like nothing you have seen before! The colors are so beautiful. Different colored stripey crags and crevices mostly below where you are standing rather than above like a mountain would be. We spent a lot of time driving through here and stopping every so often. We were told it wasn't worth our time, but we would wholeheartedly disagree!

Delta-09 Missile Silo

For thirty years during the Cold War, the silo at Delta-09 held a Minuteman II missile at the ready to respond to a Soviet attack. Today, visitors can view a missile in the silo through a modern glass enclosure. Delta-09 is a unit of Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. The Visitor Center is located immediately north of I-90, exit 131. The Launch Control Facility Delta-01 is located ten miles east of Delta-09. (reservations required for tour) and the Delta-09 missile silo is fifteen miles west of the visitor center.

Follow the signs from I-90, junction 110 to find this easily down a dusty lane. There is not much there, except to visualise / think about the ENORMOUS potential for destruction (of a Russian city?) this site could have delivered if activated. All very sobering. Free and well worth a 10-15 minute stop.

If my review has helped you, please give me a "Helpful" vote - thank you.

Living off an unfounded reputation. This is just a series of shops stuffed full of tourist orientated goods. There are a couple of interesting shops - the book shop and the Western Wear which stand out. No pressure to buy. Good that it is all inside so would be good on a wet day.

Nice to see if you have the time but you will not miss much if you just keep on driving.

Dakota Sky Stone

Reviewed By kade435 - Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Went in just browsing....no intention of buying anything. Saw some inexpensive (1/2 price) authentic Indian stone earrings that I thought might make good souvenir gifts for family back home, so started looking a bit closer. The charming sales lady came over and started to explain about the Indian tribe that made the jewelry that I was considering. I was so impressed with the tribe (Zunni..I had never heard of them til then), their jewelry making procedures (they use tiny pieces of stone leftover from the bigger pieces) and the meanings/stories of the stone groupings, that I bought several pair. I was so impressed about the story of the jewelry I bought, we even went back a couple of days later to see about more. The prices were very reasonable, even for the signed jewelry, and they had a quantity of other authentic Indian items as well. I prefer buying and supporting the local tribes rather than just getting standard souvenirs. This tiny store is a must see....and ask about the story each piece of jewelry tells....fascinating....it means so much more than just decoration.

Roberts Prairie Dog Town

Reviewed By Bryrock - Murfreesboro, Tennessee, United States

The Roberts Praire Dog Town is a fitting reward for those who travel on Sage Creek Rim Road. Most of the road is un-paved and very ridged. It can be difficult to find a speed that feels both safe and doesn't literally rattle you to death. We took the road based on a recommendation from a park navigation app. You definitely wouldn't want to do it while the road is soaking wet (it was damp when I did it), but there are many more spectacular overlooks on that road and it is worth going at least as far as the prairie dogs, before you can loop back to a highway that takes you to the main entrance (re-enter) of the park from Wall, SD. Also note, however, if you only want to see praire dogs, you will most likely also see them from the main loop road (alternative route).
