Lucy the Elephant

Originally named Elephant Bazaar, this six-story elephant-shaped building was built in 1881 by James V. Lafferty, Jr. in hopes of selling parcels of land located on the beach in Margate, New Jersey. Over the years, this unique structure has served many purposes -- most notably as a tourist attraction. Today, Lucy the Elephant is recognized as the Oldest Roadside Attraction in the United States and has been declared a National Historic Landmark. Guided Tours through the elephant structure occur every half-hour during business hours, with the last tour of the day beginning 30 minutes prior to closing. And don't forget to shop our Gift Shop for all of your elephant-themed items, including one-of-a-kind Lucy the Elephant souvenirs available nowhere else!

Tour, which is about every half hour, takes about 15 to 20 minutes, but worth it. Guide tells you about Lucy's history and remains available for questions. No bathrooms - go across street to restaurant (they allow it, as the restaurant uses Lucy's parking lot) but the men's room in restaurant has no changing table. Great views from the howdah of Atlantic and Ocean cities. Not something I would go to repeatedly, but go at least once. Inside staircases are narrow and twisting, so recommended that small ones be carried.

New Jersey's tallest lighthouse awaits you at Pacific and Rhode Island Avenues in Atlantic City (walking distance from Showboat Casino). Take an amazing journey into time and above it all as you ascend the 228 steps of the Absecon Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. Ventnor Pier

Reviewed By joanz359 - Philadelphia, Pa

The Boardwarlk is not limited to Atlantic City. There is a Boardwalk in Ventnor and this continues through Margate The Boardwalk does have restrictions on bike riding. If you want a beach feel take a walk in the direction of Ventnor. This is a residential area that is year round but swells in size due to summer homes and rentals. There are no restaurants or bathrooms but there are restaurants if you leave the Boardwalk and head in one or two blocks. The Pier is a fishing pier and you cannot go to the end unless you are a fisherman but you can take a walk and enjoy the view towards Atlantic City and down beach towards Margate. Walking in this direction you pass some of the large homes and the new knockdowns. If you are a Boardwalk Empire fan you can imagine that this was once the empty area referred to the the series. You can leave the Pier and sit on the beach but you will need to buy a pass if you intend to remain for any length of time.

AAAA Bike Shop

Reviewed By nebunule - USA

Offering a flat fee of just $15/day, AAAA Bike Shop offers a good option for those seeking to rent bicycles to tour the Atlantic City and Ventnor boardwalks along with the surrounding area. Bike locks are provided free of charge. We had our own helmets, but I believe helmets are provided for free as well.

The bikes are well-maintained and seemed safe. They close at 5:00 pm so make sure to get there early to enjoy as much of the day as possible. There is some parking in the area, but it can be a challenge at times.

I can't speak to the quality of their repair facilities, but like I said, the rental bikes seemed to be well-maintained. I had a tire repaired at that location years and years ago, but I don't know if it was the same owners, but based on the rental bikes, it seems like a safe choice.

Note that there are restrictions as to when bikes are allowed on the boardwalk. During the summer, in Atlantic City, I believe the hours are 6:00 am to 10:00 am. In Ventnor, I believe the summer hours are the same on weekends, but anytime during daylight hours during the week. Call the bike shop to be sure. The next two towns, Margate and Lonport, do not have boardwalks, but are good for biking. Margate City, the next town over has a designated bike path in the street, and Longport has low traffic volume with strict speed limits.

C Sure Children's Park

Reviewed By memberHolland - Holland

This playground is a local initiative. We found it when we were walking on the Ventnor Beach boardwalk with our children. According to the information panel lots of families and companies have contributed to this big, safe playground with musical instruments and picnic tables. Entrance is free. Ventnor City is located between Ocean City and Atlantic City.

If you walk a couple of blocks south, you will find another free playground near the Ventnor City community building and Ventnor City Library. At the beach of Ventnor City you need a beachbadge. Lifeguards sell these badges, that cost something like 10 dollars. In the vicinity of the C Sure Children's Park is paid parking with parking meters that need quarters.
