Clara Maria Cheese & Clog Farm

The Clara Maria Cheese Farm and Clog Factory is set in the pastoral polder landscape just southwest of Amsterdam. This historic 160-year old farm creates an inviting atmosphere for visitors to step back into old-world charm. The original barn has been charmingly transformed into the wooden shoe factory and the cheese making room, with a spacious, nostalgic gift shop that has a large variety of Dutch souvenirs. Visitors are welcome to drop in for a tour and to taste a variety of our delicious, freshly made cheese.

Walking into the building, the stress from the city melted away. The first impression may be that there are a lot of trinkets for sale. As soon as you meet the staff you know that this is a special place.
William invited our son to help make a clog. This was a highlight for our 10-year old and we heard about it the rest of the trip. The cheese-making explanation and tasting was memorable and well done. We appreciated the hospitality and friendliness of everyone. The petting of the cows and calves is "on your own." The staff will happily tell you stories of the animals when asked.
The generous sharing of time, expertise, and stories made this a family-friendly outing that we loved.
If you are cheese lover, the gouda drying racks will feel like cheese heaven. The different flavors are magnificent.
You can email Clara Maria and arrange for a guided tour, which we did (no cost). However when we got there the farm was largely empty since the tour group had just left. So it was just our family for the clog making and cheese sessions.
We rented a car from Amsterdam to stop here on our way to somewhere else as I had read that a bus from the city can take a while. It was easy to locate with the car's navigation system.

Royal FloraHolland

Prepare your visit: Go to the Google Play Store/Apple Store and download the IZI.TRAVEL app. Open the izi.TRAVEL app en click on the compass button on the lower left side of your screen. Type in 'Aalsmeer' via the search bar and open the Royal FloraHolland audiotour. Have fun! Our location at Aalsmeer is the largest trading centre for plants and flowers in the world. And it's just a stone's throw from Schiphol airport. The earlier you get here, the more you see. From the Visitor Centre, walk across a gallery through the auction complex. At the end of the gallery, you'll arrive at the auction halls where you'll see the flowers come before the auction clock. As you walk around, you'll find information panels which explain - in four languages - the auction process and the activities you'll be watching. There's no need to sign up for this tour in advance. You can also explore the auction with a professional guide. Reservation on the website, extra charge.

It was worth it to get up early to get out to the auction while the action was frenzied! It was a beehive of activity! It was hard for us to take our eyes off of the floor with all of the rapid and precise movements. Like a synchronized orchestra. And the warehouse is like a city onto itself. So glad we finally made the effort to go on this trip!

Since the wether was not good, rainy cold so no good to visit an outside playground, we tried out this place. Also because they have changed his favorite white shark place. This place also only charges you for the kids, so you can come with a number of adults and just enjoy some drinks or snacks while the kids run of and play safely inside. My grandson loved it, so I hardly saw him at all. He only came back a few times for a drink or a snack, so next time I will take a book with me. Well they do have magazines laying arround, so you are free to read them also. Good place, clean, reasonable prices so it would be nice if they open up in Haarlem soon.

Two ladies and one dog in a "whisper boat" - beautiful!
Easy to follow the signs and well worth the time. Quiet, beautiful - a little get away to this beautiful bird paradise.
We rented our boat in Noorden, but went to the lovely little town of Nieuwkoop later for lunch.

De Tuinwinkel

Reviewed By WorldTravelOne - Breukelen Ut

In a very quiet part of Holland alongside a river and in the middle of pastures is this place for gardners with an expensive taste. The place has a webshop although not all items can be sent (e.g. not a wooden green house, that you have to come and get yourself). 'The Garden Shop' (litteral translation from the Dutch 'De Tuinwinkel') is geared towards gardners who appreciate rustic workmanship products and whoe are willing and also able to afford the prices attached. The webshop is a good start to explore if De Tuinwinkel is for you. De Tuinwinkel is located on a big piece of land, lots of green around it and the remodeled modernized farmhouse 'Stroomzicht' is on the grounds as well. Beware for the narrow winding round alongside the river that you have to drive to get there. It is a bit of a scary road to drive when you are not from around the place and not used to two way traffic on a road that seems to be made for just one way traffic.

Greta and interesting views - although one of the times we visited it was so foggy it was difficult to see the ends of the buildings. Interesting to see all of the airline tails that we do not see in the US.
Note: Security was terrible the last time we visit Schiphol - long, ling long lines with few employees interested in helping customers - what happened to that Dutch efficiency?

What a great museum! It's an operating windmill, pumping water every day. The 10-min walk took us through a picturesque tiny village. Our tour guide was nice and very informative. She grew up locally and it was obvious she loved the area. Even my teenaged niece was fully engaged.

Brewpub de Schans

Brewery-Distillery De Schans since February 5, 1998 and since last year opened a Brewpub and airbnb accommodation. We are making our own local beer top fermented beer and strong liquors which are also served in the brewpub. We also serve wine and non-alcoholic for the ones who are not fond off beer. Every first sunday of the month and third sunday of the month we have live music. If you like to stay longer than airbnb might be an opportunity. The accommodation is registered at airbnb.

I have known this as a brewery for ages and have gotten a lot of my specials and their own local specials here for years. Recently they opened up a Brewpub and that is well worth a visit. It is located behind the brewery adjacent to a beautiful, calm herb-garden and they serve specials and their delightful own Schans Bier & Guus Bier. If you're in the area, you will not be disappointed (and if you enjoy too much of their brew, there's a hotel across the street and they sometimes even have a room available :) )
Do not forget to check the opening hours ...

I come here regularly with my nearly 3 year old and she can literally spend about 4-5 hours here!!! It's free entry and well cared for. There are goats and baby goats, pigs, horses and chickens. You can feed the goats (20c for food and 50c for milk). There is a great playgroup and a fab restaurant and organic store. Highly recommended day out!!
