Lots and lots of industry information - for both kids and grown-ups. You are not allowed into the plant, which is just next door, but the museum, or rather, information center provides enough info - history and current state.

Unlike the Kremlin in other places with Castles and buildings clustered inside the high walls. The one in Uglich is non-walled and you can walk freely to view different spots at your leisure including churches and statues. Quite a nice walk and is recommended to others while staying in Uglich.

Transfiguration Cathedral

Reviewed By retireeVancouver - Vancouver

The Transfiguration Church is located in Uglich's old town, a 10 minute walk from the river cruise ship dock. We had a local Uglich guide who spoke understandable English show us the 2 church attractions we had come to see. This church is the pastel yellow one with the 5 green domes. It had a separate clock tower, also in pastel yellow, that once had been the tallest structure in Uglich. The bells still rang when the hour changed. This church was the newer church of the two churches, having been built in 1713. Both are just steps apart so little time is wasted walking from attraction to attraction. This church is the one that sits at the end of the long treed walkway into the old town. Colorful seasonal annuals along this path provided a picturesque photo of this church.
At the entry to the church, there was an attractive white columned porch. The wooden door was framed by grey cement columns decorated with intricate grape bunches and vine tendrils. Faded frescoes in need of repair appeared over the door and on the porch ceiling.
Before we entered the church worship area, there was a small room where the walls had mural type frescoes illustrating a naked Adam and Eve frolicking in their garden. This type of portrayal had been considered inappropriate for a church at the time, yet they had not been removed or painted over to hide the offending sexual parts.
In the main part of the church, the 6 tiered gold iconstasis, that filled the front wall from floor to ceiling and from side wall to side wall, was breathtaking. Icons were separated by gold pillars/columns each with a strand of twining leaves thickly applied as decor. The rails for each row of icons was elaborately decorated in a similar manner. The central door in the iconostasis, however, was simply decorated with 6 icons. An icon overhead showed the Last Supper.
These icons were dated from the 17th and 18th century and could be studied carefully to determine which icon painting style each portrayed. The 3 rows of saints/prophets over the sanctuary door had the more obvious gold backgrounds which represented heaven. Each of these icons portrayed, usually, just the one figure holding a scroll with some script on it - perhaps a famous passage that figure was known for. These 3 rows held the larger icons. I liked how these figures were shown looking towards the central door. The icons lower down on either side of the iconstasis' central door tended to be groups of figures and were, to my eye, more cluttered looking. The icon with Virgin Mary and baby was, as expected, to the left of this door.
Every inch of space on the church's walls, ceiling, and window wells were covered with frescoes depicting the life of Christ and the stories in the gospel. The guide was proud to show us the vaulted ceiling fresco which had a copy of Raphael's "Transformation" painted on it. These copies seemed to have captured the facial expressions and fluid body movements that Raphael is known for. The colors used were subdued blues, red, yellows, greens and white. The frescoes had been applied not as a mural where the images merge, but in panels with each biblical scene being separated from those beside it.
There just was so much detail to observe in this church which was used, at one time, as a summer church because its size was difficult to heat during winter. Even so, the room alloted for the parishioners was small; only one group was allowed in at time. It definitely was a good attraction that, fortunately, didn't have a 200 ruble camera fee. Perhaps that was because it is now a working church. Being on a guided tour we had about 15 minutes to see the wonders in this church and then it was the next group's turn for a visit.

Located at the top of the steps up from the River Cruise Dock, this Museum is well placed for the tourists who arrive here to wait on their bus for a tour of the town.
Unfortunately closed when we were in town, the art visible in the window was of reasonable quality, but probably an acquired taste if you wanted to buy a piece.

Bicycle Museum
