It has an area of 16,171 square kilometres (6,244 sq mi) and 2.29 million inhabitants, making it the sixth smallest by area and the fifth smallest by population of Germany's sixteen states. Most of Thuringia is within the watershed of the Saale, a left tributary of the Elbe. The capital is Erfurt.

Buchenwald (1937-1945) became a synonym for the crimes committed by the National Socialists. Until 1950, the Soviets used the grounds for a special camp; after 1958 the German Democratic Republic established the “Nationale Mahn- und Gedenkstätte” here. After 1990, the memorial was reorganized according to a new concept now also providing for commemoration of the fates of other victim groups. New Exhibitions place the crimes in their historical contexts. The history of Weimar and Buchenwald provides a unique historical resonator for historical-political education work. This uniqueness lies in the proximity between the camp and Weimar as a cultural centre, and in the access thus offered to the past. Buchenwald is sure not an easy place to visit but a must do for so many reasons. The concentration camp is well preserved and very informative.

This was another highlight of our trip in Eisenach. We had no problem finding a parking spot at the side of the road. Coming from the town, the Drachenschlucht is on the right. Right before the welcome sign “Drachenschlucht” is a small lake covered with moss. The water looks green.
The path is easy to walk on, even for kids. It’s only 3 kilometers long. The best part of this walk is when we are surrounded by high mossy rocks dripping with water. Underneath our feet, we can see the thunderous water flowing by. There were two spots like that and it felt like an adventure. Kids loved it to the brim as well!
Only at the very end of this trail it’s a bit steep. We certainly enjoyed this trek in nature!

We visited JenTower last year in summer and it was a pretty hot day. Maybe this was an advantage as we had the lookout platform almost for ourselves.
The fare is not too bad and you need to switch lifts up there (the receptionist will tell you where).
It's a nice lookout and the views are just beautiful.

Short trip in Thuringia with my working group. We decided to visit this museum. The main subject of it is monumental painting "Early Bourgeois Revolution in Germany" by Werner Tübke. this huge painting express the story of the "farmers' war". The museum usually hosts temporary Exhibitions and we saw that by Frank Deux, a French painter. Regarding it, i was a bit disappointed because of his strange art interpretation.

The Erlebnis Bergwerk Merters is very worth a visit. For more than three hours they offer you a spectacular and very entertaining program at a depth between 500 and 1000 meters. Impressive to see how saltmines are operated and have been operated. You got a very good overview of the history, including the Reichsbank Gold storage bei the Nazis in the 40's, up to the modern times. They drive you around in modern open pick up trucks, so the experience is very 'live'. The guides are people from the field: they can tell you very interesting details about the mine. Extra dimension is the Iron Curtain aspect. The mine was splitted during the Cold War between East and West. Take a whole day for the visit. The tour consumes about four hours, but the drive is at least one hour from Eisenach and even more from Fulda. Very attractive for both adults and younger. Not for very young children; I would say starts at the age of 10 app. Entry ticket about EUR 28. As far as I have heard, only tours in German languages. There are English brochures. Also very attractive for groups as a daytrip.

The Memorial Point Alpha used to be an important observation post in the period of the cold war. Today the historical site and its components are authentic credentials that serve to inform the visitors about the former border between east and west. In addition to the remains, a newly renovated museum covers the historical context and depicts the impacts the repressive system of the GDR had on the population close to the life-threatening border.

We passed by here while on the way to Nuremberg from Dresden on a group tour.
This is an open air museum where you have an insight into the east and west Germany. You can see parts of the original Berlin Wall.
Would have preferred to have more time to walk around and on a less windy day. It was 14 degrees but feels more like below ten. Do wear a windbreaker esp during spring or Autumn

The Baumkronenpfad is time and money well-invested - it's easy to handle, accessible for wheelchairs, walking aids and strollers and fun for all ages. Don't walk past the well-kept, very well-signposted hiking trails down below - they are worth some time as well. The exhibition at the entrance is very hands-on, appealing to children especially, the restaurant offers fine food from regional sources.

I'll not repeat the excellent comments made by other contributors.
This visit would have been excellent if the information boards also had an English translation and more importantly, the audio guides were more comprehensive, particularly covering the tunnels in some detail.
We both feel that it would have made the visit excellent

Unbelievable how wonderful the experience was at the fairy grotto. We were a group of photographers and the staff were beyond kind and helpful. Absolutely the best we could have asked for.
