Usambara Mountains

Reviewed By fg7948 - Central Province, Sri Lanka

My girlfriend and I did a wonderful 4 day, 3 night hike in the Usambara mountains with Dennis (+255 62 168 1856). Dennis was incredibly helpful giving us instructions how to get from Dar to Lushoto by bus, which is not something that is very easy to find out! See below. Dennis met us at the bus terminal in Lushoto, and arranged our accommodation for the first night there. We then trekked for 3 days in the beautiful ever changing mountains. The landscape was so varied, with amazing rainforest and really impressive hillside farms. We walked through lots of lovely villages, and Dennis taught us plenty of Swahili along the way, which we got to practise with the locals. Dennis had some superhuman ability to spot even the most camouflaged chameleons along the way, and was really knowledgable about the flora and fauna, particularly the birds. The highlight was staying in the catholic nunnery, where we were fed very well by the sisters, with a delicious beef pilau. The whole trip was really relaxing and beautiful, and Dennis organised everything really well, allowing us to be super relaxed and take in the surroundings. He also makes a delicious ‘Usambara’ guacamole, and a mean chapati. We hardly saw another tourist for the 4 days, which was such a great authentic experience. We would highly recommend the Usambara mountains, and especially Dennis as a guide. Thanks very much Dennis, and best of luck for the future- and of course the upcoming wedding! Info for Dar to Lushoto by bud, from Dennis This are the buses Shambalai bus, Maning nice, burudani and my happy. Accommodation is available to cater for all tastes and budget. A well equipped campsite is also in place, with easy access to the farm and restaurant.

My group of 16 foreign students stayed at the various hostel rooms at the Irente Farm Lodge and they absolutely loved their experience. We were able to reserve them rooms at an affordable rate and the staff at the hostel was very helpful and friendly. Rooms were very clean and separated by gender. Myself and my colleagues were provided ideal accommodations separate from the group. Safety was never an issue and all the group's property was secure. The meals at the farm restaurant were preplanned and, this is not an understatement, it has incredible food and the chefs can cater to whatever dietary restriction that you might have. The cheese and bread made on the farm can compete with the best European products. A delicacy in a region where cheese is almost taboo. Our students voted the meals at the farm as their favorite during the course of their 4 month course. I would highly recommend staying here whether you are traveling in a group or just a solo traveler. Lushoto is a quaint and lively town as well. Do not miss this place if you are coming to Usambaras!

Saadani National Park

Reviewed By pidgem - Roanoke, United States

I had wanted to visit some different National Parks on this visit and Tro Peaks/ Muddy to Dust suggested I try this place. My first view of the Indian Ocean was breathtaking. It had been raining there and I was greeted by a beautiful rainbow. The park is not very large and due to the recent rains some of the roads were impassable. That did not interfere with my enjoyment of the park. There were several large herds of giraffe and while they were curious they did not come near the vehicle as happens in some part on the Northern Circuit. The lush vegetation provided much area for the many species of birds found in this park. We were able to observe reed buck, dik dik and some larger antelopes as well. Spectacular sunsets provided a wonderful end to the day. The Saadani Tented Lodge was a comfortable and friendly place to stay. I probably could spend a week at this park and be perfectly contented.
