Sumac Ridge Estate Winery

We are celebrating our 34th year as an estate winery in 2015. Sumac Ridge was the first operating estate winery in British Columbia. We have been dedicated to producing wine from 100% BC grown grapes since our inception. We are home to three unique brands in one iconic location. Sumac Ridge Private Reserve wines have welcomed you home for over 30 years. The traditional method sparkling wines of Steller's Jay are wonderfully vivacious, perfect for any occasion. The bold wines of the Black Sage Vineyard speak to the terroir, telling the story of 20 year-old vines planted in the right place at the right time. Visit the winery for a tasting, tour or picnic. We are open for tastings year round, tours and picnics run from May to October.

We attended the mastering Meritage and it was an amazing experience. We tasted and discussed 5 different varieties of red and then tried to replicate the wine makes Meritage. The class was very informative and lots of fun. The food was wonderful and they topped...MoreWe are delighted that you enjoyed our Mastering Meritage event. It is always fun to play wine maker for the day. We look forward to having more of these events and are very excited to release our Black Sage Vineyard Meritage. Cheers, Marion

Elephant Island Orchard Wines

Elephant Island began as a family haven, a place of summer picnics, orchard adventures and magical holidays on the Naramata Bench. Today the elephant has grown into a 6,000 case winery driven to craft wines of character. Wines that sing with the unconventional voice of vanguard fruit. Wines that are balanced by a reverence for traditional winemaking practices. Wines that are rooted and inspired by family history.

They produce fruit wines, with the tasting in the patio. We concentrated on the red blends that are excellent and good to keep for few years, at very reasonable prices.

Kettle Valley Steam Railway

We figured it was too late for the regular season, but since we were staying Summerland for a week, we thought we would find the main station and hopefully get more information from someone that might be there. We did look at their website, but I like to talk to people.
The season is actually quite short (May to October) likely due to the weather at that sea level. But there are a couple of special runs they do in the fall and for Christmas. Unfortunately our stay only was during a run that Saturday and it was booked up.
We will be going back in the summer to catch some of the things that were closed this time and this is one for sure. There is a senior rate, but not apparently for the Great Train Robber and BBQ event. So perhaps just the ride to the trestle and back for us!
The station was open and a nice young woman was very helpful as well as a young man that works there who was instrumental in us taking a look at the S. S. Sicamous in Penticton. Can't wait to try it next year!

We loved this spot. It was larger than the other vineyards today but not a huge one like Mission Hill or Quails Gate although we enjoyed both of those as well. We love learning about the wines and ask lots of questions. Our tasting person really knew what she was talking about and seemed to like her job. She even refused the tip. Great stop. Bought three bottles.

We enjoyed the flight of beer in the saloon.
During the wine tasting, we felt a little rushed, and some of us got more info than others from our server.
One of our party was pregnant when we visited, and there was a little gelato bar to order from and a good-sized shop to explore instead of wine tasting.
The patio area was comfortable with a stunning view.

When we visited, the gate for vehicle access was closed due to wildfire risks so we walked from the small parking area just below the gate. We decided to try walking up the "grind" - a rough path that goes straight up the hill - rather than the paved driveway. It's very steep, but a great challenge. It was a hot and dry day, but everyone in the family enjoyed the walk, and the views were very worthwhile.

Summerland Ornamental Gardens

Originally established in 1916 as part of the Federal Agricultural Research Station, now the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, the 6 hectare, 15-acre Summerland Ornamental Gardens expanse was designed to help new residents, many from the U.K. and other rainy climates, choose ornamental plants for their Gardens that would be suitable for the dry Okanagan climate. In collaboration with Agriculture Canada, the site is maintained with help from the non-profit society, the Friends of Summerland Ornamental Gardens. As you stroll through the Gardens you will have views of Okanagan Lake, Giant's Head Mountain and the Trout Creek Trestle railroad bridge, an outstanding engineering feat constructed for the Kettle Valley Railway. Walk by the demonstration garden beds and learn principles of water-smart gardening with the diverse Welcome Garden, the Xeriscape Garden, the Cactus Garden, the Iris Beds, the Meadow, the Butterfly Garden, the shade Gardens, and more. The Gardens are open year round and the Friends of the Garden Society request a $5.00 per person donation.

We found this awesome winery one year ago and we just went back yesterday. They have an awesome of selection of wines from fruit forward white, tasty reds and the most amazing Rose! What made our experience even better this time was the employee in the tasting room. Blake was incredibly informative, generous and a ton of fun! They had the most amazing sale so we ended up buying more than 2 cases of wine (which they shipped to Alberta for free, which is wicked). We will definitely be back and I hope that we will get to see Blake again. I would highly recommend coming to this winery and you will not be disappointed!
