Sukkur (Sindhi: سکر; Urdu: سکھر) is a city in the Pakistani province of Sindh along the western bank of the Indus River, directly across from the historic city of Rohri. Sukkur is the third largest city in Sindh after Karachi and Hyderabad, and is 12th most populous city in Pakistan. New Sukkur was established during the British era alongside the village of Sukkur. Sukkur's hill, along with the hill on the river island of Bukkur, form what is sometimes considered the "Gate of Sindh," in reference to the city's location along the frontier that separates the historical Sindhi heartland from the Saraiki-speaking regions to the north.

Famous Sadhu Belo is also called Sadh Bello.Any visitor going around Sukkur can't miss this picturesque place an island in the Indus River.On its eastern side nearby is the one section of the of the Lansdowne Bridge which looks as the gigantic iron rail/pedestrian bridge built by British Empire Rulers in 1932.When you hire a boat from Sukkur side Masjid Manzilgah a small mosque can not be ignored where bloodshed took place before partition amongst Muslims & Hindus.Now a desolate place with only few devotes for prayers.The boat takes you in 5 minutes from the right bank of river to the foot steps of complex of temples on the island SADHU BELO.Just on the approach one is amazed by the intricate art works on the marble walls of the temples with figures of NERG (HELL) & its miseries & on other hand stone carving of SERG (Paradise) scenes created by imagination.The island is lush green with lot of trees & lawns,very cool place.Visitors must respect the MANDIRS (Temples) on entering prayer areas where statues of Hindu Gods & Holy Hindu scriptures are kept.Serene place for meditation attracts lot of Hindu pilgrims,visitors & the tourists.One can take pictures from outside the prayer areas of temples after permission from the Hindu custodians.

British rulers can rightly be proud of many many development works which they took in this part of the world .ROHRI WARI PUL commonly called & referred in folk songs is this very vital & important bridge made of grid iron, is daily daily talked about.Before opening of this RAIL ROAD /pedestrian paths,the only means of crossing mighty Indus river was by weak boats.This bridge was opened in 1888.Bridge was the only source of crossing on foot before construction of LLOYD BARRAGE.There was ticket for crossing even on foot from Sukkur to Rohri & myself enjoyed such excursion number of times.My father in his youth once traveled from his town Pir Jo Goth to Sukkur & way back in a which is almost 50 miles both ways.The brdge connetcted northern areas of Sindh & route to Baluchistan from eastern areas on left bank of Indus.After opening of AYUB BRIDGE on 6th May 1962 the railway crossing stopped on Lansdowne BRIDE.Recently bridge has been declared dangerous by the railway authorities but still light traffic plies on it.A wonder of the world & Sindh province carries history in its construction & service.

An outstanding landmark in 'clifton" area with historical background is "MOHATTA PALACE" originally evacuee property of Mr.Mehta occupied by the Government of Pakistan.In initial years the building with spacious rooms, green lawns & imperial facade was used for foreign ministry & after shifting of Pakistan capital to Islamabad was given to sister of founder of the country Mohterma Fatima Jinnah (called Mother of the nation) "Maader e Millat" till her death. I visited this place couple of times with wonderful Exhibitions of the articles of national & historical importance.Here we with all my family members, enjoyed viewing motor cars used by the "Father of the Nation"Quid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.We witnessed precious pictures of Sukkur Barrage (LLoyd Barrage) construction days.The ceremonial dresses used by His Highness Mir Ali Murad Khan ex ruler of "Khairpur state".in upper Sindh,along with their household articles,guns & swords..The pictures of Pir Pagaro elders & ex -Pirs of Pir Jo Goth Distt.Khairpur (Mir's) Sindh,spiritual leaders of "Hurs".The items of use on railway stations,benches,lanterns,signal flags & other things.Many pictures of Sir Abdullah Haroon family & their woman folk were also of interest to us.The recently published books on Karachi "Karachi during Raj" book was also important document. Their is ticket for entry to the building.Well kept,neat,clean & world class facility.In the backyard area were marble statues of Queen Victoria & Pre Independence period.A wonderful experience ,memories of which we will cherish for rest of our life.The place is calm,safe & secure in peaceful residential area,one has to park the vehicle outside on empty road.There is no separate parking area.

With my friends I visited the graves of seven sisters famously called "Satiyan JO Asthan" believed by locals as innocent seven sisters having super natural powers`The graves are on the left bank of mighty Indus river, just near Lansdowne Bridge on Rohri side.Very prominent seven graves made of yellow stones have intricate designs on the pattern of graves in Makli cemetery(Worlds largest Necropolis near Thatta Sindh).The place is visited by man & women.There are numerous stories for which there is no authentic record but mostly hearsay type of narration.The raised construction on head side of these graves make these different from the other graves in the vicinity & area.Many ladies with diseases come here for prayers in the hope of faith healing from many areas including southern Baluchistan.The area is kept clean by the men called MUJAWERS in local language.The original graves are said to be in a cave,where we couldn't go.And men are not allowed but only women inside that cave.On the graves one can find Persian inscriptions which at least I couldn't read.

Outstanding landmark of Sukkur built on the hill overlooking Sukkur city is must see place for the visitors .Along with the minaret is tomb having many graves including one of the builder Mir Masoom Shah Bakhri governor of Mughal Emperors.Unforgettable experience of climbing narrow stairs are not very easy for young but hard for elders like me.The fantastic view from the top is unforgettable.At the ground nearby is modern "ICON" superstore.The visitor of SUKKUR must not miss the opportunity to visit this historical landmark.

At the foot of hillock nearby with many famous buildings lies GHANTA GHAR (THE CLOCK TOWER) famous,busy, hub of all trade & commerce and gateway to bustling bazars & central fish,meat,vegetable market.Once there was famous HaAFEEZ cinema on one side now turned into shopping arcade ,opposite to it is Al Habib Hotel & Restaurant centre for tasty food lovers at evening.Nearby is prepartition day's IMPERIAL cinema.In our youth years we enjoyed many famous movies in these cinema houses.The population & the traffic on roads have incresed many folds which makes it difficult to move around.There were many shops around this clock tower including famous "Sindh Photo Studio" where myself visited for our camera film developing/printing & pictures.But all these shops have been demolished to make the roundabout spacious for traffic.Nearby area is used for parking of the vehicles.On eastern side is uphill road which approaches the MASOOM SHAH MINARET but this road is rightly used for one way downward traffic since beginning.The clock tower erected by wise British administrators is proof of their worthy dedication in reforming & developing the society of this area.People of Sindh still praise the noble services of ANGREZ BADSHAH (English Kings) by remembering their reformed time/period before Independence & creation of Pakistan.

"Lab e Mehran" as name implies "Lip of the Indus".Someone poetically named this park on the right bank of Indus adjacent to Great Lloyd Barrage in Sukkur was made open to public of Sukkur some fifty years back.It was an essential & well received entertainment place by the citizens of the city & nearby towns,villages & visitors.A green place,green lawns & few trees, very cool due to mighty Indus flowing nearby.One can stroll by the river bank ,enjoy by hiring boat which can take you near the barrage & man-made island .At evening lot many children,women & men reach this place.Many vendors sailing ice cream,syrups ,beverages & some with eatables are seen fulfilling the need of visitors. Across the road is "Hotel Inter Park Inn".A neat & clean place for people affording to avail the posh inside,which has a parking facility available.The hotel itself feast for eyes being perched in between two canals of the right bank of Indus.One can satisfy the taste buds by consuming BBQ items as well.

Ghouri's cloth shop on Frere Road Sukkur was very famous for over fifty years for its merchandise,cleanliness and courteous attitude.When they opened the super market on famous spot near historical monument "Masoom Shah Minaret" on hillock locally called TAKAR (hillock) ,its fame spread all around the area for variety of things offered to the customers in the classic world standard.Though it is very very small as compared to supermarkets of Karachi but one is compelled to appreciate the standard of presentation,layout of items and prompt service for customers.I visited the facility with a friend and was impressed to see it.The only other store 10 miles away in Khairpur city is "3G".This one in Sukkur is very much prominent and superior when compared with other commercial places of the city.

While travelling from Rohri to Arore one has to move towards south -east side.After leaving Rohri one finds the old course of the Indus river bed strewn with pebbles reminding us the historical background of the bygone era.On a raised mound is the remnant of the mosque built by the Arab conqueror Muhammad Bin Qasim.The only part of the mosque to be found is the western wall with parapet.Surrounding this building are ruins of the old city where Raja Dahir last Hindu ruler had seat of power of the old Sindh.Visitors are recommended to carry their water & food with them because one can purchase sweets ,biscuits and toffees only from the local small shops.No hotels or restaurants at the area.
