If you are in the area and you are interested in architecture or Libraries, this is worth a detour. Easy to get there on the metro from central Rotterdam, and then a short walk across the small town centre. It literally is a book mountain, as the name suggests, built inside a glass pyramid. Interesting mixture of modern architecture with very traditional aspects, such as the tables and chairs and shelves and the little rooms created for small discussions- all of which could be in a traditional library. So much light in the building and a sense of fun. Very friendly staff allowed us to wander round and admire. In the older part of Spijkenisse, which has some delightful vernacular buildings, to contrast with the more modern part of town. Whole place is interesting from the town planning point of view.

Located very close to the Boymans van Beuningen museum, it is well worth a visit if you are interested in architecture or interior design. The house was designed for one of the directors of the van Nelle factory, his wife and 2 daughters. It is set up as a grand villa, with bedrooms for 2 maids, a studio for the 2 daughters to study, and several large and interconnected rooms. Although the architects did not design the furniture, they did decide upon the furniture that was to be used in the house. Most of that furniture is still present, the original or a replica. Build in 1933, the house is full of technological novelties. Make sure to aks for the free audio guide, as you will see much more as well as hear the reasoning behind several colours.

Went at lunchtime on Mothering Sunday and was devastated to find it closed. Ditto the windmill. Either I'd got the opening times wrong or the staff were spending the day on the beach, possibly with their mothers. Anyway, the moral is to make absolutely sure of the opening times before you come.

Museum Vlaardingen

Reviewed By SeimenBurum - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The museum has just reopened (Spring 2015) after extensive renovations which integrated the former warehouses of a fish trading company.
The collection is interesting but deals with very local issues.
There are some style rooms and the history of the once large local fishing industry is shown.
Most interesting is the history of the area long before the Romans came. Where Vlaardingen is now there was a small but important settlement and some archaeological findings from those times are on display. It was nice to see the remodeled faces of our ancestors from those times.
The museum lies on the inner harbor of town with the old steel sailing ship Balder moored in front

The museum is nice to visit when you are around.
