Perth Zoo

Located just minutes from Perth City, Perth Zoo is a convenient and beautiful way to meet Australia's incredible wildlife. Ever wanted to immerse yourself in the Aussie outback but have Asia's stunning rainforests and Africa's wild savannah right around the corner? Perth Zoo, with over 1500 animals and some of the most beautiful Gardens in Western Australia, is your ultimate day out. Open every day of the year, Perth Zoo inspires and directs all work to save wildlife. Go for a bushwalk and discover the best of Australia's wildlife including koalas, emus, wallabies, kangaroos and our enormous saltwater crocodile, Simmo. Go for a safari through the African Savannah with rhinoceros, giraffe and lions or delve into the Asian Rainforest and meet elephants, Red Pandas, tigers, otters and a colony of endangered Sumatran Orangutans. You can explore at your own pace or take advantage of the many Zoo docent volunteers who have a myriad of stories to tell and help unlock some of the hidden secrets of the Zoo. With at least half a day needed to see the Zoo, we recommend a full day to make your experience the best it possibly can be! The carousel, wagon hire, zebra car rides, keeper presentations, free electric BBQ's, picnic tables and cafe make the experience all the more worth it. For the more adventurous get up close and book a daily Eye to Eye experience - you might feed a giraffe, pat a rock wallaby or meet our quokka!

We were looking for a way to be outside on a beastly hot day and opted for an 8 minute ferry ride to the zoo in South Perth. We were pleasantly surprised by the lovely, thoughtful exhibits, the gorgeous vegetation, and the many, many animals we saw. We intended to stay a couple of hours, but ended up roaming throughout the zoo for five. We would have stayed longer, but the zoo was closing.
What a treasure!

The Old Mill

Reviewed By Kevin B - Perth, Australia

I have driven past the Old Mill a zillion times as I headed from the city towards Fremantle and it has taken me 12 years to actually visit here.
In the old days, it must have been in full operation, a bustling location that sided the banks of the Swan River. Like many Dutch and English mills, she is white washed and conical. With Perth's propensity to have demolished everything of historical value, this is one piece of architecture that has thankfully survived.
Make this visit part of a foreshore walk and donate a gold coin to help for her upkeep.

Paddle Steamer Decoy

Reviewed By Kevin B - Perth, Australia

Ever since I've been in Perth the Paddle Steamer Decoy has been a South Perth feature that looms across the water from Barrack Street (and now Elizabeth Quay). She is not only a part of local history. She is a treasure.
Recently under new ownership, I had the pleasure of a walk-over as renovations were underway and near completion. I have travelled on her quite a few times before and I know what it is like gliding through the "narrows" and under the shadow of Kings Park, a sense of history pumping through my veins.
In the old day, Decoy was the charter boat to hire for weddings and what a magnificent wedding venue. The upper deck is immensely spacious, the views outstanding. And the lower engine and bar ares are equally fascinating and glorious. I wish they would open her up on the jetty too, and not just for private hire. I'm sure you'd have people queuing up to board.

Windram Art Gallery

Reviewed By Jeffry B - Melbourne, Australia

Windram Art has a range of art, mainly depicting the Australian outback. Notable among the paintings are the gigantic boab trees from the Kimberley in the north of Western Australia (WA). The colors are pleasingly matched. The size of the paintings ranges from large oils to postcards that can be posted home easily. There are a variety of other art works, including indigenous art. Windram Art is not a large gallery, but it would repay a trip for anyone interested in Australian art. The gallery is a short drive from the city on Mill Point Road, South Perth.
