Eisenhower Birthplace State Historical Park

Located in the heart of Denison, Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site showcases the home where the 34th U.S. President Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was born in 1890. Antique furnishings fill the modest frame house, illustrating the working class life of the Eisenhowers. The visitors center celebrates Ike with memorabilia and exhibits featuring his many accomplishments as president and war hero.

Stop here and go to the hurst house first. There's a short film about Ike that is well worth the 5" watching time. Much memorabilia Is there and historic events nicely displayed during his presidency are reminders of our country's history and Ike's influence. The actual home is where as very young child Ike lived. Go drive around it and stop at the statue. There's a butterfly bush with hundreds of butterflies swarming around it.

The area is huge, it's a part of Lake Texoma at the Texas part. Beautiful nature, with pumpjack among the birds. You can drive around and stop at some spots, one with wade birds, other with waterfowl and another with shorebirds. Pickniking, hiking, fishing even hunting (with a permisson) is oke but no camping. It is a perfect place for wildlife viewing, especially birds.

The Harber WIldlife Museum is the creation of Lacy Harbor, a local businessman who owned a very large bank. He and his wife have traveled the world, bringing this amazing collection of animals and artifacts back. He purchased this property a few years ago and built the museum to share with the community. It is a really neat experience you will enjoy if you have time to drop by. Not sure their hours of operation so check in advance. It is a favorite day trip for local schools.

Painting with a Twist- Sherman

Painting with a twist was a wonderful experience for Girls Night Out. We needed to do some bonding and have some fun. This experience was just what we were looking for. I plan to go back with my husband because I think he will enjoy it also. This is not just a "girlie" thing to do. There have been lots of men and teens who have participated. A great activity that resulted in a painting I am proud of even though I am not the artsy type.

903 Brewers

Reviewed By Greg W - Erie, Pennsylvania

We were in town and going to do some sampling here anyway, but a little research told us there were tours with a souvenir glass this Saturday.

I really dislike reviews that discredit breweries and beers based on styles the reviewer doesn't normally enjoy. I had the Citra on top IPA, and the nose and head on this unfiltered ale said it all, next I had the Crackin' up Pecan Porter. It would hold up to any porter with lasting flavor through and through even though it was a bit too toasted for me. Finally I had the Barrel Aged Sasquatch Stout. This was by far my favorite barrel aged stout to date. The nose was of the finest bourbon and the vanilla rode the milk stout through the finish and beyond. If I could only take some of this home!

Jeremy, the owner and brewer, took us on a miniature tour, talked about the process, his experimenting, and the future expansion. He was available for questions and conversation making the stop more than enjoyable. Behind the bar, the ladies were knowledgeable and mixing 2 or 3 of their beers to make unique libations. They told us about things to do in the area and made a super recommendation for dinner later that night.

If you like microbreweries, you must give this place a stop. There is no menu here, that is a Texas thing, so eat or snack before you go.

I got to see the museum during the Sherman Jazz Fest/Red River Mardi gras. This is a wonderful museum, focusing on the great trumpet greats of all time. Lots of memorabilia, with many of the items previously owned by the musicians themselves. They had a great band playing Dixieland music on the top floor during the Jazz Fest.

I wasn't sure what a city facility swimming / splash park would entail...a huge pleasant surprise. There are water spouts, buckets, lazy river, slides, swimming pool, all depths and for all ages. Many young lifeguards constantly walking around and watching at all times. Very clean, nice bathrooms, low cost, tables and chairs for relaxing, snack bar...

Definitely plus for the City of Sherman...other small cities could take a lesson!

Grayson County Frontier Village

Reviewed By texasrepublichistory - Dallas, TX

The Grayson County Frontier Village and Museum is located in Loy Park, between Sherman and Denison. The park includes a visitors center and county museum, with many interesting historical artifacts and great photographs. Spread across the grounds are about 25 buildings, including area log cabins and homes built between 1830 and 1870, a small replica pioneer courthouse, smokehouse, newspaper office and dentist office, and barber shop. The buildings are all arranged with period furniture and equipment. I enjoyed my self tour using the very informative tour guide from the visitors center, but would suggest checking ahead to see is a tour guide is available for a more informative visit. The volunteer lady at the first building mentioned that all the buildings are open during the Civil War Weekend, with in-house guides, occurring in late October. Having a guide and the buildings open would make a big difference. The cost was minor - $3 - and I spent about an hour walking around and also visiting the museum. Recommended as an educational stop from Sherman or Denison.
