Wall painting is new, but in the old school. A similar painting stories I have seen in Great Novgorod in Yuriev Monastery. Monastery buildings are newer than in Vladychny monastery, which is on the other bank of the Nara river.

European Bison Nursery

Reviewed By TartanWanderer - England, United Kingdom

This place is way better than I had expected. It costs 400 Roubles to visit and is well worth it. It is about 80kms outside Moscow so you really need a car to get there - or go on an organised trip.
The guides - which are mandatory - only speak Russian. You have to go on a tour - you cannot just wander off on your own. If you are doing this in winter as we did, remember you could be outside for two hours. It was cold and snowed heavily whilst we were there so dress well including boots, gloves, hat and so on.
You will see both bison and the related zoober. Very interesting creatures. They will try to stick their huge heads through the enclosures but don't get too close. They can move very suddenly and have a lot of weight behind them.
They are great to photograph but don't use flash photography as it stresses and startles them.
There is a museum to walk around afterwards. There are toilets and a tea house / coffee shop is advertised but it didn't exist as far as we could determine. It has been replaced by two nice souvenir shops selling some OK stuff at cheap prices.

Serpukhov History and Art Museum

Reviewed By JMB-NLY - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA

As with many towns in Russia (especially district centers), Serpukhov has its own historical museum. This one doubles as an art museum with a surprising good collection. That stems from the fact that a local notable, and Old Believer from a family who made its fortunes in textiles, built the collection in the 19th century. The non-Russian art isn't notable, but the Russian collection includes many of the masters: Repin, Vaznetsov, Ostroukhov, Levitan, Goncharova and others. The rooms on the first floor (especially) are in excellent shape. The only downside is that the large windows let in so much light that it can occasionally be hard to view the paintings without a glare. But in general, this is an out-of-the-way gem worth visiting.
