I looked up the word Sumaq after my first time coming to this beautiful little store. Sumaq means very beautiful or nice in the Quechua language, native to Peru. And what a fitting name! Come visit the store at San Bautista and be transported to Peru, from the beautifully adorned jewelry, hand crafted clothes and bags, to the stunning frames and artwork. On top of such beautiful craftsmanship, the customer service and staff are second to none. I for one can’t wait to come back for more artwork to hang in my home and to ask them more about Peru. Can’t wait to trek out on my own adventure to Peru after visiting Sumaq Art!

Mission San Juan Bautista

Reviewed By ransom007 - Anaheim, United States

There is limited free street parking available near the mission. There is a small admission fee (I paid $3). It is one of California's 21 Catholic missions. There is a good sized gift shop. The museum portion of the mission has several artifacts but little information about them. The grounds are well planted and maintained. The church is quite fabulous even by the lofty standards of California missions. It was the site of some of the scenes from the Alfred Hitchcock movie "Vertigo."

San Juan Bautista State Historic Park

Reviewed By OldeBlueHen

This is an interesting and educational historic sight which sits adjacent to Mission San Juan Bautista, a still active historic Roman Catholic church. There are displays of early buildings and descriptions of key historic figures from that area and how Spain and the Catholic Church was tied into the early history of California. The park is a little off the beaten path. You take the exit for the town of San Juan Bautista off of SR 156 and follow the signs in the down town area to the historic district. There you will find the Mission Church and the state historic park (corner of 2nd St and Washington Ave). There are also some additional extras to see including part of the San Andreas Fault which runs right next to the Mission Church (you can walk right on top of the fault line itself), and the areas of the Mission San Juan Bautista used in filming the Alfred Hitchcock movie "Vertigo". The people at the state historic park can give you a lot of details on where exactly the filming was done. This makes for a very interesting visit. There is a fee for touring the building of the state park.

We went to San Juan Bautita and enjoyed walking Third Street. There are a variety of great stores. They include art galleries, antique stores, a Peruvian Store. There are places for a drink. We had dinner at Jardines de San Juan. We liked the decorations around the street lights. We also liked the Valentine's heart as we were there right before Valentine's Day. San Juan Bautista is a charminig historical town with a mission.

Fremont Peak State Park

The hilly terrain of this park provides a serene setting for hiking and other outdoor activities.

Beautiful views at the state park. Fairly easy trails, moderate at best. The park ranger was very friendly and gave us great advice about where to hike for the best views. It was getting late, so we had a quick walk to the west side of Fremont Peak and had a wonderful view all the way to the coast range. To the north and east was a view of Hollister and of course, San Juan Bautista.

San Juan Oaks Golf Club

San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located just outside of the historic sleepy town of San Juan Bautista and is a short drive from the Monterrey Peninsula & Silicon Valley. What makes the property unique is the age-old oak trees, native vegetation and wild life, which provides a welcome solitude from life's busy pace. At the heart of San Juan Oaks is a Fred Couples designed 18-hole championship golf course with a majestic twenty thousand square foot clubhouse. The design of the facility is reminiscent of an early California hacienda. The sprawling area is the perfect retreat for any type of event. San Juan Oaks specializes in large events including weddings, business conferences and receptions. The main event space can accommodate groups of up to 300. For smaller engagements, the private Fred Couples room is a wonderful option.
