Bodega San Javier

Reviewed By May L

Reviewed By patbsas2016 - Buenos Aires, Argentina

I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that a visit to The Ferreyras' mountain home is probably the # 1 attraction in San Javier, and one that you will remember for life. I have visited it many times in the '90s, always on horseback, with a guide and without one, once I learned the way up the mountain. And I have been back this year, only to find but little change: the younger generation has now taken over, in this shepperd´s family, whose grandfather never set foot in the village. You can reach the post by 4x4, trekking or on horseback. I recommend the latter. The mountain slope is too steep if you are not in very good shape. And some prefer to drive by 4x4 three quarters of the road, and leave the trucks to continue uphill on foot. At the "puesto " you may have lunch at a long community table. They serve " pollo al disco " / chicken, homemade pasta with chicken stew, or a snack of homemade hardpork sausage and homemade bread. Water from the natural mountain spring. You´ll be surrounded by farm animals: goats, chicken, ducks, porks, peacocks, sheep. You´ll get a glimpse of the farm tasks and economy: knitting on loom. You can even buy some of their knits.
There is a brook that runs at the back, where we had a picnic on the first visit, and enjoyed the astonishing views of the mountain arround. An unforgettable experience ! One that takes you back in time 200 years back.
