Top 10 Things to do in Rancho Palos Verdes, United States

September 1, 2017 Timmy Ribble

Rancho Palos Verdes (also known by the abbreviation RPV) is a city in Los Angeles County, California atop the Palos Verdes Hills and bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. An affluent suburb of Los Angeles, it is known for large tracts of open space and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Rancho Palos Verdes is translated as "Ranch of Green Sticks", probably referring to the willows in the northeastern part of Bixby Slough (now known as Machado Lake) shown on earlier maps.

Glass Church / Wayfarers Chapel

Overlooking the Pacific coast, this beautiful church was designed by the son of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Reviewed By Tami C - Phoenix, Arizona

I had tried bringing my kids here several times but there always seemed to be a wedding going on. Finally, last summer we managed to stop when no one was there. This Frank Lloyd Wright chapel is absolutely amazing. It’s towering glass walls and ceiling is surrounded by pines so close to the sea can’t be beat for peace and tranquility.

We didn’t make a long stop because when you have teenagers this is maybe a 20 minute jaunt to look at the chapel and walk through the grounds. But they did seem to really enjoy it as it’s an architectural experience that you won’t find anywhere else. We ended up seeing it featured in some TV show and it was also exciting for the kids to point at the television and yell, “hey we’ve been there!“

A tranquil garden offers a lovely walk around the garden. It was January so there was not all the possible blossom. However we enjoyed our walk there. We would have enjoyed a cup of coffee or soda should there have been a café. The ladies in the shop were most friendly.

Twice bought shirts at Nordstrom, but couldn’t find a jacket. My friend found bargains for a 10 month old granddaughter at Macy’s. Dined at night twice in Brio (I think) Italian restaurant and had lunch in Nordstrom’s 2nd level cafe with a heated patio. There is also a separate Barnes & Noble bookstore between the Street and parking lot that is open late.

Redondo Beach

This is still my favorite beach in Southern California after all these years! It’s clean and family friendly, with gorgeous views of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and beautiful sunsets. Great for surfing, sitting in the sand, playing some sports, bringing kids, splashing in the waves, etc. You can also enjoy a nice walk or bike ride along the strand (concrete path). There is metered parking along Esplanade, or you can find parking along a street nearby like one of the avenues. There are many fun restaurants and shops either in the Riviera Village around Avenue I or up north at the Redondo Beach pier. You won’t regret visiting this fabulous beach!

The Interpretive Center is interesting and manageable. Think the opposite of the British Museum. Just a few thoughtful rooms with geological and ranch models, dioramas, amazing photos and short videos. The staff is welcoming but not overly intrusive. I learned a great deal about the various settlers of the peninsula as well as whales.

Palos Verdes Shoreline Park

Reviewed By MKTBE - Topeka, Kansas

We thoroughly enjoyed our morning spent hiking at Palos Verdes Shoreline Park. The hiking trails can be accessed from several points, but the main parking area is located near Trump's National Golf Course. From the parking area there are public bathrooms, a drinking faucet and paved trails that wind through the golf course and lead to the cliff trails.

The views from the top of the cliffs were amazing on a beautiful, sunny Spring morning. The trail runs along the top of the cliffs, but is very safe when you adhere to safety warnings. There are numerous trails that then lead down to the ocean. It is perfect for persons of all ages. Our three-generation family hike included those from four years of age to mid-60's. A wonderful time was had by all!

Regal Promenade Stadium 13

Reviewed By Gail G - Torrance, California

For a long time in my world, movie-going was directly proportional to what was playing at the Cinerama Dome, The Village Westwood or the Crest. Unless an IMAX was concerned (or unless I REALLY wanted to see something and I simply had no choice) I avoided multiplexes with the notable exception the Arclight chain, which in the world of multiplexes seemed to be one chain which wasn’t too bad.

And then there was Regal.

I grew up in an area where it was virtually impossible to travel more than a mile in any given direction without encountering at least one option for movie-going. They were everywhere, like today’s nail salons—and even when I married and moved to our present location, there was there was a drive-in two blocks away, a rundown neighborhood movie house maybe five minutes away and a couple of multiplexes within a three mile radius, all of which have disappeared from the map. Nowadays the chief options for first run films are a part of shopping malls where sound reverberates like a skating rink and you can always find the theatre by following the aroma of popcorn.

And then there’s the Regal.

Yes, it’s in a shopping mall, but it’s an OUTDOOR shopping mall, which automatically does away with the sound reverberations and popcorn smell. It’s even a PLEASANT shopping mall, so they get bonus points. Parking is free and usually plentiful. That there are 13 screens in the complex means there are decent odds of finding a film which appeals to you.

No, I’m not crazy about the noisy arcade which sits in one corner, nor does the availability of Cinnabon Gooey Snacks, “Gourmet” pizza or chicken bites strike me as particular assets. Perhaps there are also a few more tacky advertisements than necessary as you stroll to your auditorium, but all is forgiven as you sink into one of their super-duper cushy recliners, put up your feet and enjoy what’s on the screen. I have to be honest here: I can actually sit through those awful advertisements and film promos when I’m in one of those recliners. I guess that’s the idea.
