Just outside Rambouillet lovely forest walks with deer and wild boar. Amazing bird of prey show better than anything we have ever seen in the UK. If you visit on Wednesday or weekends you can pay extra for Odysee Verte where you walk in the trees on rope Bridges, the kids loved that experience. Not particularly cheap but easy to spend all day at this attraction.

This is the National farm for the Merinos sheep - they keep the thorough Merinos sheep for France. This is a working farm but it is very clean. People who work there give explanations and demonstration at given times. There are sheep, hens, cows (can see milking), goats, horses, rabbits, Guinea fowl, pigs, donkeys, geese, ducks, and all these may have young ones depending on the time of the year of your visit. There is also a farm shop with products from various regions of France. Plenty of opportunities for photos!

I went to Rambouillet on 2 Oct 2011 which happened to be the day of annual special events. Every year, the 1st week of October is showcased with specials - vintage car rides, mini train ride (special), discounted access to museums, parks, sheep house. The train museum hosts the vintage cars show & ride. There is also a mini train ride. All are paid rides, of course. This is the 1st stop, from there you can go to the sheep house and queen's dairy which hosts special offers on local milk products and tasting events.
It's a wonderful place to spend with family especially in sunny weather.

Chateau of Rambouillet

Over the course of time the 14th century fortified castle has been home to a number of illustrious personnages who gradually transformed it into a delightful residence acquired by Louis XVI. The royal estate is now a presidential residence, open to the public and used at intervals to receive heads of state invited to France. It contains some magnificent examples of interior decoration, such as the marble chambers, the rococo decorations in the “Marie-Antoinette” apartments or those used by Napoleon in neo-Pompeian style. It is surrounded by a formal garden, canals and five Islands. The visit includes the castle, the Queen’s Dairy and the shell cottage. Site with the "Outstanding Garden" label. Open:> 1st April to 30th September: from 9.50 a.m. to noon and from 1.50 p.m. to 6 p.m.> 1st October to 31st March: from 9.50 a.m. to noon and from 1.50 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed:> Tuesdays.> 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th november and 25th december. Unfortunately the chateau was undergoing necessary restoration on our visit, so most of the external views of the architecture were covered up. However, I should imagine its beautiful. The chateau is situated at the end of the main street, just off the town square, in a lovely park. Well worth a visit and taking a picnic to enjoy what is on offer.

I bike ride passing this man-made lake in the forest of Rambouillet almost every other day all summer long and from my experiences the hotter the temperature the more people are there and if it is also a weekend then the place has a feeling you're really on a crowded beach day vacation.
The food is good if you forgot to bring a picnic bag.
It is 5€ to enter the private beach but it pays for its cleanliness and showers.
I rate this place a great little paradise. Mr C

My husband, 13-year-old son, and I spent a fantastic day with Thor in & around Rambouillet last week, and highly recommend him and his company. Contact with him through his website was extremely easy. He’s fluent in both French and English (we speak NO French, so this was important to us). He was able to give us very detailed instructions to get from our hotel to our meeting point using which ever route we chose (bus, metro, train) – and it was fast and easy.
We chose to meet him in front of the Chateau in Rambouillet. We arrived at the train station and walked through the town (fairly easy, just take a look on Google map). Our arrival day coincided with the town’s market day, so we bought some fruit to take along on our bike ride. We had coffee at a cafe while we waited for him right by the Chateau gate (both the fruit and the coffee were fun purchases, what with the language barrier!)
Thor arrived right on time, and took us in his vehicle to where he stores the bikes (he has a lot of them, there’s sure to be one to fit each person). He took the time to make sure we were comfortable with our bikes, offered us helmets, and made sure we had a backpack to carry what we needed (he had bought a couple of baguettes in town to supplement our fruit). He asked a bit about what we were expecting to do that day, and we were off! The weather was beautiful (we got lucky) and we rode just over 30 miles – but that was our choice, he offered so many neat things to see that we didn’t want to miss any of them! He will tailor the route to your needs and fitness level, he communicates via email to get an idea of what you’re interested in. We biked past the Chateau and their Gardens & waterways, through many parts of the Rambouillet forest, through several small villages, stopped at an Abby, a goat farm (bought cheese for our lunch) and went down into a valley with an old mill and a waterway, where we had lunch.
Most of our trip was on paths through the forest, a little bit was in towns on barely travelled roads, and just a little of it was on more highly-travelled roads that had bike lanes. For a short time we were even off-roading it where we had to pick up our bikes and carry them around big rocks (I got a little help here!)
Thor is very knowledgeable about the area and the history – he took us to an area way back in the forest where there was a huge stone picnic table, where Louis XIV would have picnics back in the 1700’s – very cool, and so far off the beaten track, not something you normally get to see as a tourist! Toward the end of our day we stopped by a lake with a beach for an ice cream/beer/wine break.
The only thing we could find to complain about (and it is SO minor) was that our bottoms hurt after 30 miles on a bike seat – the bikes themselves are nicer than the one I have at home, but I suggested to Thor that he upgrade the seats. He has already emailed me and told me he took my suggestion and purchased gel seats. It’s nice to know that my input was valued by the business owner. He also took the time to make sure we got back to the station in time to make the last “fast” train back to Paris, and gave us several restaurant suggestions when we told him we were struggling to find a good place to eat. Excellent service!
If you have any questions about Adventure Tours France I would be happy to answer them, just send me a message.

Jardin Chinois de Yili

Reviewed By Dominique B
