Borgo Castell'Arquato

A magnificent historical village which we enjoyed visiting during a Medieval weekend event. There were Market stalls leading from the Castle down the cobblestone streets to the centre. Lots of handmade crafts for sale. There were musicians and jesters. The little shops and friendly locals helped make it another reason why we should return in the future.

It also has a church and a hotel wihthin it's walls. It is also still a residence for the owners which makes is more alive. We enjoyed and admired the old buildings that were all in very good upkeep.

We've been in Grazzano Visconti several time to spend a day between the typical shopping and the various events. This time we have found this sign with "museo delle cere" and our curiosity drove us in.
The statues and their dress are worth of far more famous museums, but imho it's the guide that makes the difference. Every statue has its story both in the past of the caracter and in her manufacturing.
Look at the photos: the details are wonderful.
The time spent here is absolutely well spent.

Gropparello Castle - Fairy Tales Park

The castle of Gropparello is an old yet perfectly preserved fortress, which was built like an aerie on the top of a rock peak. From its terraces and towers it is possible to enjoy a breath-taking view on the cliff around the walls. Here you can be wrapped up in a truly enchanting and magical atmosphere. The nature around the Castle, with its bright and far-reaching landscape, gives it an air of mystery, just like being immersed in the old fairy tale of Rapunzel in her tower. The property is articulated into the Castle, with its park and its rocky walkways , and the Masseria (Farmhouse), where the services are located (such as the Restaurant, the Rose Pavilion, and the salon Loggia dei Leoni) and where it is possible to enjoy its patrimony of antique rose Gardens and fruit trees (especially grapes and quince trees). Masseria and Corte dell'Ulivo The different spaces of the Castle's park are all joined by a picturesque gravel path, linking the Masseria to the Castle. In case it is necessary to travel such length by car, it is possible to drive on the main road and enter directly through the Castle's gate. The open spaces, wide and articulated, enable us to create a trail where the various stops can mark the different moments of the ceremony. This is very important to create an event that is rich, dynamic and full of surprises. Our goal is to make your time pass by lightly and to make each moment bespoke and tailored to your wishes. The invitees can put themselves at ease, enjoying every corner of the Castle and fully participating to all the moments of the celebration - the cocktails, the wedding lunch, the cutting of the wedding cake, and the dance afterwards. It is possible to arrange a light aperitif with cocktails in the Castle, so to reserve a space for the starters, for which we usually offer the Padiglione delle Rose (the Roses Pavilion). The Wedding Lunch or Dinner can be provided in the Loggia dei Leoni, or in the Sala Rossa (the Red Hall), with its authentic mediaeval feel. All halls are equally charming at night. The Wedding Cake represents a central moment in the celebration. We particularly treasure it both in its aspect and quality (hence why we decided to offer the services of our in-house cake designer) and in the context of its presentation. The celebration ends with the dance. The best location for this is the Castle's stone hall, whose walls are perfect to be covered with coloured lights. If desired, the Castle has plenty of outdoor spaces for the bride and groom's photos: from the wilder, more romantic spots, such as the walkways around the castle walls, to the wonderful rose Gardens, where nature and art are combined to create spots of pleasures and delight. The atmosphere can be enhanced by beautiful night lights, whether with coloured lights or with Roman torches. We also propose bespoke Tableaux Mariage, which we can customise by working with drawings, gold-foil or embossing, for the most stunning results. The Tableau can be customised around specific themes - whether the honeymoon, or the couple's love story, or referring any image that they feel represented by. It can be coloured or black and white, in pencil, ink or watercolour, with or without golden embroidering. It can look like a painting or like a comic book. If the couple does not have a clear idea we are more than happy to participate in the search for an idea they will be satisfied with, even preparing free drafts to choose from. The cake and the 'confettata' (the Italian tradition of a buffet with confetti, typical sugared almond candy) are an important part of the Wedding banquet. Recently cake design has become a more and more present trend in our culture, and of course we, too, have found ourselves under its spell! From our laboratory we can create simple or more elaborated cakes, which we take care in customising exclusively for each event.

In the Food Valleys of Parma and Emilia Romagna is an ancient castle that still preserves the fascination of a medieval fortress and the fantasy of a fairy tale. Breathtaking views of gorges, rock cliffs, woods with unique plants and geological formations make it one of Italy's national treasures. The current owners have transformed its wood into the first "emotional parc" in Italy where children discover traces of fairies, gnomes, elves and witches entering into a fairy tale that leaves Disney far behind. The 8th century Castle and surrounding woods are the settings for historical re-enactments,festivals, miracle plays and evocative medieval dinners. A tour of the Castle with its artifacts and legends (ask about the ghost of Rosania Fulgosio!) are a living museum. The ancient rock of "Gole di Vezzeno" gorge cuts through the surrounding hills. For the adventurous, you can hike into the gorge to discover more of the magic and mystery of Gropparello. The Castle is an absolute must see if you will be visiting or touring the Northern region of Italy. Slightly off the tourist flow for most Americans, you will need a GPS for directions but once found you'll be able to locate it by heart.

Ponte Vecchio (Ponte Gobbo - Ponte del Diavolo)

Reviewed By Tualie - Varese, Italy

Yes, I know... but I have to add that is original, interesting, beautiful and ingeniously built with its unequal arches. The “Hunchback” is related to the devil-one night build bridge legend, present across many places in Europe... and the Mona Lisa myth still speculates today!
This is an attraction absolutely not to be missed and it won't take a long time.
Tip: If interested, walking from the town to the other side of bridge, going right there is a spring where locals go to soak their feet... the waters are said to have curative properties (mainly for skin diseases) and has the classic rotten eggs smell and is very salty... is located in the woods and there are no facilities.

Basilica di Sant'Antonino

Reviewed By Diago_34 - Oxford, United Kingdom

Sant'Antonino is probably the oldest church in Piacenza and it acted as its Cathedral in the Middle Ages. The entrance (which is on one side, known as 'The paradise") is very impressive with two intriguing statues supporting the top of the door, the most mysterious is a female figure with an artichoke in her hands, not a common vegetable to be found in church architecture. The bell tower is impressive and has an unusual shape, it is octogonal. Unfortunately it was restored a number of years ago and the old, small biphorae windows have been given columns and capitels which look far too modern. The inside is all very interesting, and in particular (if it is open) the cloister at the back of the church is a real haven of peace and beauty.

We arrived to Vigoleno by chance.
While planning a day-trip to Castell'Arquato, a renowned medieval city, and looking for information on the Internet, we found out that the Vigoleno Castle was not far away from our destination, and looked even more interesting!
It was not so easy to find this castle, since it is in an isolated area, but the quest was absolutely worhy: simply by standing in front of the castle entrance, we felt like being in the past of our Country.
Just take a walk in the streets of Vigoleno to enjoy the unique atmosphere!
Climbing the Vigoleno tower is a must.
It will cost you 3€, but you cannot miss the wonderful views of the castle and the surrounding areas that you can enjoy from the top of the tower.
The tower hosts a musemum of medieval weapons, as well as pictures and paintings of old Vigoleno

Small but well organized museum next to the Cathedral - nice 18th and 19the century atmosphere. The Duomo is beautiful, of course most visitors start with the San Colombano monastery church, also this church is very well presented and very neat. I enjoyed the silence.

Duomo Di Piacenza

Reviewed By chris r - Thruxton, United Kingdom

Piacenza is a typical Italian city much under rated by comparison with Parma but worth a detour. The Duomo is splendid and for the best view of the City and surrounding countryside take the lift up the outside of the tower. This is a temporary attraction whilst the tower is being restored. I found the experience rather disconcerting as the lift shook a bit and not for those of nervous disposition but do try.
