This was the most amazing experience of bird watching I have seen. It is set up with platforms at the top of a hill next to a valley so that you are at canopy height where the birds hang out. We saw many birds up close and then took a short hike on a trail in the valley where we saw frogs, lizards, and butterflies. Dave Jr. was our guide and was great explaining everything we saw. I would most highly recommend stopping at Dave and Dave's for a couple hours. It will be well worth it.

I was looking for a tour that was just for the coffee tour with nothing else as I only had a few hours. We picked the one that included lunch and transportation to and from our hotel. This tour was perfect. Picked up at 10:25 am and returned at 2. When you arrive you’ll notice the lush landscape. The weather was perfect, very cool with a nice breeze. The tour started by giving a history of coffee and what year it made its way to Costa Rica, then you learn how it is grown, moving on you go thru the lovely grounds and learn about the harvesting and drying of the coffee beans. Very well done. Tasting of the coffee is done several times within the tour. You get to see where it is roasted and packaged although you can’t actually go into the processing plant. There’s a short video of the tasting by the baristas to know when the beans are perfect and the coffee is brewed in a press and 2 volunteers get to taste and “slurp” the coffee. The tour concluded with a trip in the gift shop and lunch since we chose that option. Lunch was delicious with a very fresh salad, nice cold beverage, lentil soup, rice and beans, mixed vegetable, green plantain dish, chicken or pork ribs and desert of a rice pudding. If you get a chance take this tour, you will not be disappointed.

Sarapiqui River

This narrow river offers white-water rafting that's enjoyable at every level.

We took a white water rafting trip with Pozo Azul Adventures on Class II/II rapids - rough enough to be quite a thrilling ride.  You don't just get a bit wet on this ride, you get completely soaked.  This was only my second time white water rafting and I was quite glad it wasn't my first attempt.   The trip was great fun and health and safety was taken very seriously.  It felt exciting - and thrilling - but not really dangerous.   Checkout my travel blog (no ads. - just an honest view from someone who has actually been there!) for our full itinerary and practical insider tips. View my trip report for my top ten "must dos" for a luxury trip to Costa Rica - this is definitely one of them!

The reserve is fantastic with lots of beautiful trails, the famous suspension bridge over the Siripiqui River and lots of animal sightings. We saw sloths, bullet ants, leaf cutter ants, lots of hummingbirds and other birds, lizards and iguanas. We heard monkeys and toucans as well. The chocolate lour they offer is really special. Lourdes did a great job of walking us through the world of chocolate from its history through to present day, and the process of turning cacao into chocolate. The groups are small and everyone is encouraged to taste each phase of the process. Educational, fun AND delicious! (Sidenote: just a few miles away is another really neat place: an leaf-cutter ant farm that is also really interesting for people of all ages.)

We were the first guests since the borders had opened up In Costa Rica for International tourists. The owner Rolando started the tour and was relived by the normal guide Michael. Rolando provided us a fascinating explanation of his experiment with using carbon (burying old wood underground for a few days and turning it into a grindable powder to sprinkle in the soil) as an organic strategy to better grow pineapples. Michael explained the challenges and benefits of organic pineapple farming operations. He wowed us with his amazing dexterity with his machete to transform a pineapple into an edible 'lollipop'. We met the amazing workers whose hard work and dedication make the farm work so efficiently. We need with fresh pineapple juice that tasted more like nectar and was absolutely delicious. Overall, we gained an appreciation for the organic process and why it justifies the pricing premium that is charged at grocery stores. An excellent behind the scenes perspective!
