I have visited the Orosi Valley a few times. It is one of my girlfriend's favorite places in Costa Rica. Rightly so! The river valley is beautiful, the Mountains are awesome. The small towns and villages are friendly and welcoming.

It is the most important religious object in Costa Rica and an important historical point, too. However, the building itself is comparatively new - present look in has acquired only in 1939. However, the architecture is interesting and somewhat unusual for Catholic churches as it bears Byzantine features. The Basilica, the original rock on which the figure of Virgin Mary was discovered and the miraculous spring are all objects of pilgrimage, so on Sundays and holidays the area is packed - plan your visit accordingly.

We didn't have great expectations of this visit which was included in the itinerary by our trip organisers but thanks to our excellent "girl" guide, we learned a great deal of the history and background of this ancient site, much of which is still unknown and will probably remain so as the conquistadores left no records. The rain forest itself is worth a visit for the wild life and it is a pity that the National Government hasn't as yet really recognised the value of the site, both as a tourist attraction and a vital part of the country's history.

We stayed at the lovely Orosi Lodge and spent a morning at Tapanti Park. We took the two easier trails of the three - both go down to the river. We didn't see much in the way of birds or wildlife, but it was a nice day. In my opinion it is not worth going out of your way to visit.

It was one of the greatest experiences so far in Costa Rica. The Pacuare is enormous! We've ridden for almost 3 hours on it. We had a really interesting tour which explained all about coffee growing and production. This was done in a really interesting and informative way by our guide. We got to taste the finished product which was brewed using the old sock on a wooden stand method! I don't like coffee bit I tried it and liked it. Our lunch was excellent and was a whole fish that had been swimming in their fish farm about 10 mins before. The shop was good as well and enabled us to buy some of the coffee products and also local crafts. It was great to support this small cooperative.

El Coupal Reserve is a smal nature reserve on the edge of Tapanti National Park in Costa Rica. Its a two hour drive with your own vehicle up to this lodge and smal nature reserve. The rewards are great with a rich nature, a couple of good nature treeks into the reserve and very nice but quite basic lodging. The hosts Beto and Patricia Chawez are taking very good care of their guests, they only speak spanish though but their friendliness as hosts brigde the language gap without any problems.

I completely agree with another review posted about this spot... It's cool, unique, small, but nonetheless interesting. "The Dreamer" has spent a great deal of time carving the roots from coffee trees into ghoulish faces and other peculiarities.
If you're in the Orosi Valley, certainly check it out.
A word of caution: if you're thinking of buying one of the figures, be mindful of importation laws in your country of regarding wood products.

Yes, the Lankester Botanical garden is a small, beautifully maintained garden with lots of interesting plants. But the Botanical garden, especially the one belonging to a University is supposed to be also an information source about the plants. And yet I have to see a garden so almost totally lacking labels and general plant information as this one. I counted maybe 5-6 labels throughout the whole area. Actually, a garden in National Museum in San Jose had better labeling than Lankester. The University should know that some people come not only to stroll but also to learn something. Dissapointing.

The church and museum are a beautiful part of this town's long history. It's only $1 to enter the museum. It contains wonderful treasures from when they cleaned out the old monastic residences. They're poorly lit and randomly labeled, yet quite beautiful in their simplicity.
