Located a few mile north of downtown Newport, the polo grounds are easily accessible. The whole premise is to arrive 2-3 hours prior to the starting time and tail-gate! Bring a Frisbee, soccer ball or football and play on the field prior to the match starting. The parking is very close to the tailgate area, bring a table, food, your own drinks including alcohol and just hang out. There are "booths" selling some odds and ends, clothing, jewelry etc but the fun is in dressing up - think pastels, big hats and over the top preppy. You can literally wear anything you want but treat it as an "event" and it's more fun. The announcer does a great job keeping you informed and has a nice sense of humor.

I have a real love for American classic cars and being the owner of a Mustang I found the museum extremely enjoyable. The variety of cars was fantastic, the staff were helpful and informative and parking and aces to the museum couldn’t be easier. If you love cars this is a must see.

Green Animals Topiary Gardens

Green Animals is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. This small country estate in Portsmouth was purchased in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton, Treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in Fall River, Massachusetts. It consisted of seven acres of land, a white clapboard summer residence, farm outbuildings, a pasture and a vegetable garden. Gardener Joseph Carreiro, superintendent of the property from 1905 to 1945, and his son-in-law, George Mendonca, superintendent until 1985, were responsible for creating the topiaries. There are more than 80 pieces of topiary throughout the gardens, including animals and birds, geometric figures and ornamental designs, sculpted from California privet, yew, and English boxwood. Today, Green Animals remains as a rare example of a self-sufficient estate combining formal topiaries, vegetable and herb gardens, orchards and a Victorian house overlooking Narragansett Bay.

We took this tour as part of our Newport Preservation Society Membership ticket. $45 and we entered all 10 of their properties including the Mansions and this wonderful Topiary Garden. In addition to the topiaries, they had spectacular, award winning Dahlias. The house tour wasn't available the day we went, but we felt the garden was worth the trip

I took a group of local friends here recently who had never been before. We all had a great experience on a beautiful Saturday in July. We were celebrating a bachelorette on a small scale. They are appointment only now, but it was so easy to call and make an appointment for our group. Instructions were clear on arrival, and we spread out our picnic and enjoyed their great wine at an outdoor table of our choice. It was easy and relaxing, and all around it is a great atmosphere with beautiful views! I would highly recommend going to Greenvale to anyone local or out of town, just remember to call in advance. They are offering wine by the bottle, glass and wine flights, so you can still try out a wine!
