Lake Houston Wilderness Park

Reviewed By JHarvTX - Houston, Texas

Visited for the first time to have a picnic lunch, ride bikes with my two daughters, and take a peek at their overnight facilities. Lots of picnic tables in various areas (best ones by Nature Center where there is a restroom/shower facility). We didn't plan to visit the Nature Center, but ended up going in because there happened to be an educational program on snakes going on. The Nature Center is small, but pretty comprehensive. We were very impressed. Also worth pointing out that there is another restroom inside the Nature Center and soda machines outside on the porch. After our picnic we took the Forest Trail for our bike ride, but fairly quickly diverted to the Peach Creek Trail. The Forest Trail can be narrow at times. The Peach Creek Trail (we only did the top half) is nice enough that my daughter had no problems on her cruiser bike. The trails are very scenic and my girls and I absolutely loved this adventure (our first outdoor nature bike trail ride). After our bike ride we cruised around the entire park in our SUV looking at shelters, A-frames, cabins, lodges and camp sites. A few thoughts if you are considering staying here... particularly with a group:

For the shelters, there is no parking by the shelter itself. You have to park in front of park headquarters. So, you either have to temporarily park to unload or walk back and forth to take your gear to the shelter. Also, the shelters are nestled in trees and there is no room around them to pitch a tent for extra sleeping quarters. Within the shelter area there is a clearing where you could pitch a tent, but doing so would encroach on other campers' areas. The shelters have a little deck in front where you can put some gear. The insides are empty. There is a picnic table, water faucet, fire circle, and grill. These do have electricity.

The cabins look amazing! They are located on one side of the lake accessible down a one-way road. The A-frames (only 2) are also located on the lake, but on the opposite side of the cabins.

All the lodges seem to be located within the same area, which is around the same area where the tent camping sites are located. Maybe you can camp with a camper or smaller RV, but the road that goes to the camping site area is a dead end so you cannot turnaround without major difficulty. There was a clean little playground located over where the lodges and camp sites are. As best that I could recall, the cottage is located in another area where the primitive camping sites are.

Overall this is a fabulous park for overnight stays and day uses. The trails are excellent for walking and bike riding. Groups staying overnight will want to stay in the same overnight type as if you choose, for an example, a shelter and an A-frame, you will be quite far from one another. Far enough that you will have to drive between areas.

This was the destination for our long weekend to The Woodlands, TX.

It was easy making reservations via their website. You can do all of the waivers on line to save time at the front desk. Check in was easy.

As we were walking in, my son and I both admitted we were a bit nervous. We've never done anything like this before and we had a fear of the unknown. If you have these natural feelings, they will soon vanish once you see the place.

We were brought into a room to watch a video. Very detailed explanation about hand signals.

Then it was time to suit up. You are given a small locker and everything, I mean everything, has to come off: watch, wallet, keys, wedding ring, etc....Nothing that can get caught on the netting.

First on is the big, baggy suit. Then goggles, eye protection, ear plugs and lastly the helmet. Safety first.

Once your group is ready, you walk, single file into the waiting area. Once in there, your instructor will take you, one by one, and help you "fly." Yes, it is so exciting. We paid for 2 flights. Each flight lasts one minute. Many pix and video are taken which you can purchase later.

The first flight was difficult. I had a problem getting my legs straight. The wind blowing up is very, very strong. But the second flight was much better. My legs were straight and I had much better posture. Looking at the video, I was able to "fly" almost the full minute. The instructor then took me on a "ride" and we went up a few feet, no more than 15, and back down again, spinning all the time. All I could do was laugh my head off! It was so fun. Not like the sensation you get from an amusement park ride; much smoother and you don't get that tickle in your stomach.

Yes, the prep and the wait are time consuming but it is all part of the experience. Our flight instructor then gave us a show with all of his flight skills. Amazing what he was able to do.

Would definitely again when we're in the area.

Our family of 4 found ourselves trying to escape without the benefit of having someone who had done this before. We weren't sure what to expect. (The groups usually consist of up to 10 individuals.) We got off to a slow start but luckily got help by the staff to keep us motivated to hang on there. Fun time. Look for a Groupon coupon. We paid full price and it was money well spent.

There were a lot of animals for the kids to feed and interact with. Feed is $1 a bag. My 2 year old twins loved it. The train ride wait was too long for us but it looked cute. The pumpkin patch was a little misleading and not a 'patch' but a bunch of picnic tables and boxes with pumpkins. Not too many photo opportunities but fun enough for the kids to pick a pumpkin their size.
