Costa Rica Sailing Center

With year-round wind, the best sailing bay in Costa Rica, and a range of boats to meet every sailor's needs, our school and rental facility provide a safe, exciting environment for the sport. All of our instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid. Wide range of boat rentals, boogie boards, paddle boards, snorkel gear and kayaks. Everything you need to have a great day on the water. We also have a full bar and restaurant right on the beach here in Playa Potrero.

This place has it all--very relaxed vibe with totally professional staff focused on making sure you get a good sailing experience. Very experienced but unpretentious sailors who welcome everyone to their sport regardless of experience.
Variety of modern equipment ranging from small single-handed dinghy's to cats--I opted to try to learn how to sail small dinghy's (my limited experience is mainly on Hobie cats)--my instructor (Lucy) was super patient as I had us swimming a few times before I realized that you need to face forward when changing the tiller hands (old dog, new tricks?), smile. She has lots of race and teaching experience and I learned a lot in a short time--after a few sessions I sailed solo on a smaller dinghy and had a great time--well worth the effort and my only regret is that I did not stay longer.
Conditions were perfect when I was there--perfect onshore to cross-shore winds with slightly heavier but manageable stuff outside, building from morning to afternoon (was there in December). They know the bay like the back of their hands and will advise you where to sail to have fun. Water is super warm and forgiving--no "hypothermia-must-right-the-boat-or-die" conditions here. If you like lighter winds then can start earlier and stay closer and if you want to progress then heavier stuff is also available--perfect for a group with multiple skill levels.
Staff is super attentive to safety--during the week saw a few instances where they responded immediately when people got in a bit over their heads.
Lots of families and kids around--great place if you are solo or with a family--they offer camps and group lessons--my family rented boogie boards and had fun in the micro-break in front of the Center--beach is sandy with no rocks or hazards--definitely the highlight of our vacation.
Prices are super reasonable and there are a number of different packages to meet your needs.
Cats are first love but there is something intoxicating about the responsiveness and closeness to the wind and water of a small monohull. When I go back I hope to get some instruction from Ryan on the cats but may end up opting for deeper mono-hull dive.
Sunsets from the Center (with drinks from their bar) were off the charts--hard to describe how beautiful they were--even for jaded "in 1999 I saw a green flash in San Diego" sunset people like me...
Go to the CRSC, have a beer, talk with Ryan and Lucy and they will take care of you while imparting their deep knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for sailing. If you like to sail this is THE place.

My husband and I had SOOO much fun with Nick and Gene on our Buggy Tour!!! This tour was the highlight of our trip.
A little background: Nick and Gene are the two brothers that run Go Buggy. They were born in America (Pennsylvania) and moved to Costa Rica as children. They grew up in the area of Go Buggy tours and know it very well. I also bring this up because their English (and I assume their Spanish) is impeccable.
My husband and I were bored on a Wednesday afternoon in the low season, as we hadn't made any plans for that day. I checked out trip advisor for "something different" we could do. We were staying in the Coco Bay area and saw Go Buggy and headed that way on a whim, having no idea if we could just drive up and take the tour. We figured if not, we would have at least taken a drive to a new area. MY guess is we were able to do this because it was the low season. Go Buggy was very easy to find, right on the main road in Potrero Bay with great signage. Gene greeted us and was very welcoming. He told us it would take about 1/2 hour for them to get everything set up for the tour. We came back at the agreed upon time and took off. It should be said that the Buggies are Semi-automatic. They require shifting, but without a clutch. I do not know how to drive stick, but my husband does. Each buggy seats two, so only one person of each pair has to know how to shift. Also, one brother leads the tour, while the other follows as the tail, just to make sure everyone is OK. As stated in other reviews, the tour really makes you feel that you get to see parts of Costa Rica that you would never see if you didn't take this tour. There are gorgeous, secluded beach coves and amazing mountain backroads. We saw a guy on a horse on one of the mountain roads that looked like a character right off a coffee can, Juan Valdez! A tip, do not wear clothes you plan on wearing later in your trip or that you do not want to get dirty. We took our tour during the rainy season, which meant it was much less dusty, but pretty muddy. These guys are laid back, honest, friendly, and have set up a great tour that I don't think you can find anywhere else. Also, I will say that the buggies felt much safer than ATVs or quads, as they have a very low center of gravity. Do yourself a favor and seek these guys out. You can't not have a great time!

Penca Beach

A little confusing to find but we eventually made our way to this beach. Turn at the coffee shop across from the green space in the small town of Potrero. Not the white sand that some claimed, but rather black sand covered by a layer of white-ish sand, nice none the less. Almost no one there meant that it was quiet except for the odd party of quads going by. Not many trees for shade but the day we went had a lot of cloud so it wasn't necessary to find shade. No vendors so bring our own food/drinks. Great place to body surf and read a good book.
