I Vicoli di Pizzo

Reviewed By David M - Cambridge, United Kingdom

A lovely little cliff-top town, rather faded and shabby, like much in Calabria. Nice central piazza which is pretty much vehicle-free and has the usual types of restaurants and cafes along either side. Nice little side streets laid out in a pretty haphazard format across the hillside. The Castello is worth a visit and has nice views over the beach.
The traffic is pretty horrible along the main through-street, which has no pavements and is a bit nerve-wracking, but even on the smaller streets you get cars and motorbikes squeezing through.

Castello Aragonese Murat

Italy surely has Castles with far more interesting stories. But, if you made all the way to Rizzo, and the the piazza della republicca, the castle will provide you with a great view of the sea shore (with the obligatory local 18th century story).

My kids and I greatly enjoyed the ice cream tour at Chez Toi in the main Piazza of Pizzo. Anna was great, and we were impressed to hear the story of Tartufo ice cream and see the work of the master ice cream maker. Besides, Anna gave me several pieces of valuable practical advice. I do recommend Anna and her tours.

Piazza della Repubblica

Located above in the upper part of town this is a melting point in Pizzo for both, tourists and locals. It's a very cute little square with few restaurants, gelatos and cafes. A nice small church also. From the Terrace there's a great view of Murat castle and the sea beyond.
During daytime heat pretty deserted, but full in the evenings.

Le Spiagge di Pizzo

This small beach was very rewarding for us to cool down after sightseeing the beautiful Pizzo town. There's free parking around and also a shower.
The beach was clean and tidy and also calm due to a stone embankment. Many restaurants are around to have a meal.

We popped into here, as the story at the castle was linked to this church and we did not spend too long here, but it was worth looking around.
