Top 10 Things to do in Piacenza, Italy

August 24, 2017 Jasper Kershner

Piacenza [pjaˈtʃɛntsa]  listen (help·info) (Emilian-Romagnol: Piasëinsa, Latin: Placentia) is a city and comune in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Piacenza. Modern forms of the name descend from Latin Placentia. The etymology is long-standing, tracing an origin from the Latin verb placēre, "to please." In French, and occasionally in English, it is called Plaisance. The name means a "pleasant abode", or as James Boswell reported some of the etymologists of his time to have translated it, "comely". This was a name "of good omen."

Basilica di Sant'Antonino

Reviewed By Diago_34 - Oxford, United Kingdom

Sant'Antonino is probably the oldest church in Piacenza and it acted as its Cathedral in the Middle Ages. The entrance (which is on one side, known as 'The paradise") is very impressive with two intriguing statues supporting the top of the door, the most mysterious is a female figure with an artichoke in her hands, not a common vegetable to be found in church architecture. The bell tower is impressive and has an unusual shape, it is octogonal. Unfortunately it was restored a number of years ago and the old, small biphorae windows have been given columns and capitels which look far too modern. The inside is all very interesting, and in particular (if it is open) the cloister at the back of the church is a real haven of peace and beauty.

Castello Anguissola Scotti Gonzaga

Fortress and Castle are the stronghold of the most important village of the valley, former property (XIII century) of the family Scotti, who today, with Prince Corrado Gonzaga, still hold the property. The castle was converted at the end of the eighteenth century in a quiet noble house; it is furnished with period furniture and holds inside stylish decorations and precious frescoes. For most of the year the castle is open for guided tours

Duomo Di Piacenza

Piacenza is a typical Italian city much under rated by comparison with Parma but worth a detour. The Duomo is splendid and for the best view of the City and surrounding countryside take the lift up the outside of the tower. This is a temporary attraction whilst the tower is being restored. I found the experience rather disconcerting as the lift shook a bit and not for those of nervous disposition but do try.

This is one of Piacenza's main piazzas. It is lovely, and if you happen to be there on a weekend, after dinner the bars around the area are filled with people having fun and unwinding.

This has two major items to see: the Botticelli Madonna and the Etruscan Fegato. The remainder of the archeological section was insignificant local finds. The collection of carriages was interesting and extensive especially if you haven't seen any before. The paintings were good, but not great.

Basilica di Santa Maria di Campagna

Reviewed By adevoti - Buckinghamshire

This is an outstandingly beautiful church, very simple from the outside but with a wonderful interior. Modern technology has been cleverly used to enable visitors to look at the paintings of the dome on a screen and to be able to zoom in to details-much more comfortable than lying flat on one's back to look up at this remarkable work. Highly recommended.

Galleria Alberoni

Reviewed By Carlotta C - Brussels, Belgium

I wound strongly recommend a visit to Fondazione Alberoni if you are in Piacenza. It is a beautiful place in itself to visit and has a small but precious collection of pictures belonged to Cardinal Alberoni. Among others, you may find the famous Eccentric Homo of Antonello da Messina, this is a masterpiece. It worth going there only to see this. If you are pilgrims on the Via Francigena, it is very practical to visit because it is on the way. Be careful because it is open only in the afternoon. The guided tour is done by motivated, passionate and professional guides. Don’t miss it!!
