I walked up here with my dog four days ago. The last time I did it was around 25 years ago, when I was 40ish, and this time I found it easier ! Bearing in mind I'm 66 now, overweight, and suffer with mild COPD, I was very happy to reach the top with relative ease, stopping for a few minutes every now and again to catch my breath.
Just as last time, the views took my breath away, and my dog and I spent a good hour or so just "being there" - wonderful, and a truly spiritual experience - highly recommended !

Very glad to have stopped here. An impressive ruin, the castle offers a fair bit to explore and great views from the keep. There are some interesting medieval carvings inside the castle.

Acorn Bank

Reviewed By Julie P - United Kingdom

National Trust property not far from the A66/M6. I knew that the house was empty so didn't have high expectations of that. we didn't take a tour but there's not much to see anyway so only takes a short time to whizz round. The formal Gardens are OK, with an orchard, apiary and herb garden. Possibly we didn't see this at it's best, but it was OK. There's also a pleasant woodland walk which takes you past the mill - operating at weekends, and by the stream.
Had a drink in the café and perused the booksales. It was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon and break the journey northwards, but I wouldn't make a special trip.

Wanderlusts Gypsy Caravans

Wanderlusts offer the only Horse Drawn Gypsy Caravan Holidays as well as static gypsy caravans in beautiful places in and around Cumbria and The Lake District National Park! We are a small family business and are completely off grid!

Very well organised and informative, unique experience - unique in this world and also unique if you are Cumbrian: learning things about the natural history of the place and its history. Got closest to a hare than you ever have, I am sure. And eating Mushrooms and washing in rivers. very, very good.
Everything (bar the weather) was excellent - excellently thought out, managed and developed. It is a wonderful thing to touch upon a way of life that has almost gone throughout the world in a truly wonderful part of the world. And, for us townies, get back to a bath and raging fire when the week is over. Sonny (the beautiful horse) was everything: but Cumbria was not sunny that week. Matt was kind, informative and a wonderful guide. Again! Soon! Dont book him up please?!

Pony Trekking Ullswater

Reviewed By Emcart99 - Ripon

Just returned from Park Foot campsite today. My daughter (9.5yrs) did a mini-trek yesterday and had a great time. The staff were friendly and organised and the whole process of booking was stress free. There were a variety of ages on the trek ranging from 2 complete beginners who the staff led on lead reins to a few children like my daughter who had ridden before to a very experienced adult. They all set off and had a super little trek with beautiful scenery. I was worried about my daughter going off on her own but she was well taken care of and fell in love with her pony, Jasper. Highly recommended activity

Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre

A large collection of birds of prey - hawks, eagles, vultures, owls, falcons and buzzards, set in a Walled Garden. Flying demonstrations daily from 2 pm to 4pm. Visitors get the opportunity to fly a bird at the display. On site vintage tea room and local crafts.

Reviewed By Sue B - Northamptonshire, United Kingdom

We unfortunately chose an awful day, chilly and dreadfully wet but despite this, we enjoyed our visit. We decided to have a light lunch before the flying display so they helpfully waited until we were finished before starting. The food was very good and served in a quirky room full of shelves of memorabilia. The chap doing the flying was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his birds and some of our group joined in by holding up a glove for Bob the Harris hawk to land on. It was a pity that we had to shelter under a tree a couple of times but neither we nor the birds wanted to be any more wet. It was an interesting and entertaining visit.

Dalemain

This medieval Tudor and early-Georgian mansion has been home to the Hasell family since 1679.

Reviewed By hortenseLeeds - Leeds, United Kingdom

We followed a signpost for Dalemain Mansion from the A66 on our way home from Cumbria to Yorkshire, having no idea what we would find when we arrived. It was definitely worth being curious as we found a country mansion, the oldest part of which dates from the 12th century in the shape of a Norman Pele Tower, and which was last significantly added to in the 18th century. There is also a priest's hiding place. It is the current home of the Hasell family, and has been in that family for over 350 years.
We had a very interesting guided tour of the house, which I would heartily recommend (it is included in the admission fee). In the summer the house and Gardens are open Sundays to Thursdays from Palm Sunday to near the end of October; in the winter the Gardens are open except for a period between mid-December and mid-February. There is a tea room housed in the Medieval Hall, which sells lunches and snacks, and home made scones and cakes. This too I recommend! Also there is a small gift shop and plant centre, the plants being mostly grown at Dalemain.
Did you know there is an international Marmalade Festival? I certainly didn't! However, there is -and its flourishing at Dalemain, held annually in March. This year they celebrated twenty years, in which time it has grown to such an extent that Dalmain is no longer large enough to hold it all - Penrith and Rheged are also now included as venues. The marmalade is on sale in the shop and cafe at Dalmain and I can almost guarantee that you will never have seen such an array of different marmalades, some of which are co-branded with Fortnum and Mason - what an accolade! It's also the first time I have spent over £20 purely on marmalades - I was just too spoilt for choice and had to buy a number of jars!
We are so pleased that we impulsively followed that brown signpost; we had such a lovely afternoon.

Long Meg and her Daughters

Dating from the Bronze Age, this is England's third largest stone circle that consists of a huge ring (the Daughters) of more than 60 stones and Long Meg, a 12-foot-high block of red sandstone.

Reviewed By Wary1 - Canterbury, United Kingdom

Partly because they are in the same general area people might do as we did and visit this neolithic stone circle as well as Castlerigg. The latter is much more like the typical monument and has an isolated feel about it. Long Meg though sits in lush countryside, near a farm. We were wandering around it in the company of cows, who didn't seem to mind. It's a large circle on a sloping site, cut through by the farm road. An interesting mystery and well worth the trip.
