Loved the ride to the convent. The place is so peaceful. Great view and a lot of history. You can stay there as it is also an hotel. it has two restaurants, one gastronomic and another who is more like a cafeteria.

The palace is a wonderful place which you will only find in" Fairy Tales". The "star" product here is the Gingerbread Cookies. The cookies comes in many shapes and sizes. It is a family run business for more than 2 generations. What a charming spot on Alsace's "Wine Road".

This church was one of my favorite stops in Alsace. It is interesting architecturally, has some very nicely preserved capital features on the columns, good descriptions in English, and -- when I was visiting -- hosted a lovely sculpture exhibit. Highly recommended.

Nous avons découvert récemment ce couvent qui porte le nom de la colline qu'il coiffe, trônant au-dessus du village de Bischoffsheim à plus de 360 m d'altitude.
C’est un lieu pèlerinage à la Vierge Marie bien connu dans la région, et ce depuis plus de 500 ans, où les gens vénèrent Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs dans la chapelle de ce lieu.
Nous y avons remarqué une belle statuaire , très particulière, en bois polychrome et doré (classée monument historique depuis 1980). Cette sculpture (fin 15ème - début 16ème siècle selon la plupart des sources) représente bien plus qu'une Piéta (dans ce dernier cas, Jésus serait représenté étendu sur les genoux de sa Mère éplorée, appelée précisément la Vierge de Pitié).
Mais ici, il s'agit d'une représentation de la Déploration du Christ (scène de Lamentations autour de la dépouille de Jésus, après sa descente de Croix et avant sa mise au tombeau). La scène iconographique est plus ample puisqu'on observe la présence d'autres personnages (déjà présents au pied de la Croix selon la description des Evangiles, dans le Nouveau Testament).
Dans le cas de la Déploration du Christ (dans la chapelle du couvent du Bischenberg), la Sainte Vierge - placée derrière le Christ - soutient la tête et le bras gauche de son fils, étendu entre Sainte Madeleine (à gauche de la Vierge Marie), les mains jointes et, à droite de Marie, l'apôtre St Jean, sa main droite touchant le bras droit de Jésus.
Nous avons également appris que cette chapelle abrite les reliques du premier religieux français de la congrégation des Rédemptoristes : le vénérable père Joseph Passerat. Ce dernier a suivi l'intuition de saint Alphonse de Liguori (1696 - 1787), qui, en 1732, fonda la Congrégation du Très-Saint-Rédempteur, après avoir compris la nécessité de former des missionnaires chargés d'annoncer la Bonne Nouvelle du Salut aux gens les plus démunis.
Les Rédemptoristes animent, aujourd'hui encore, ce lieu de pèlerinage depuis 1821.
A deux reprises, ces religieux furent chassés de leur couvent : lors de la Révolution française (fin 18ème siècle) et en 1873, à cause du Kulturkampf (1871 - 1887), un différent politico-religieux opposant l'occupant prussien à l'Eglise catholique. Ce fut un réel combat pour un idéal de société, anéantissant alors ce pèlerinage alsacien en plein essor.
Après l’abolition de la loi sur le Kulturkampf, les Rédemptoristes réinvestissent le couvent du Bischenberg en 1894. Les pèlerins retrouvent alors rapidement le chemin du Sanctuaire.
Durant les deux guerres mondiales qui suivirent, la dévotion à Notre-Dame du Bischenberg ne fléchit pas. Après les bombardements alliés, soixante deux hommes et femmes d’une maison de retraite allemande trouvèrent refuge au Couvent du Bischenberg (de 1943 à 1945).
Une importante restauration (autels et vitraux) eut lieu entre 1957 et 1959, ce qui aboutit, en 1965 , à l'inscription du chœur de la Chapelle dans le registre des monuments historiques.

This wall apparently dates to 3,000 BC, although they aren't really sure as parts of it were rebuilt in the 6th century. Start out at the monastery of Mont Saint Odile. Take the south loop first, which takes most of the morning. You can pop into the monastery restaurant for lunch, then head for the north loop, which is in better shape than the southern loop. Don't miss the ruined chateau...it is a side trek, but well worth it. In all, we walked around 14km, but it was so interesting that we barely noticed the time passing.

Speaking as a war correspondent and expert on modern fortifications, Mutzig is spectacular and fascinating. This vast work served as a model for the Maginot Line's engineers. Designed to block any French advance north before WWI. Actually, two main forts and a series of batteries and thick-walled casemates. Well worth a visit. Those going underground be sure to bring a warm coat - average temp 55F. Making another visit this month.
