Towsley Canyon Park

Reviewed By garyfJ6106YV - Aptos, United States

So, you have been to nearly all of the local walking, running, and worthy places, huh? Hmmm, maybe not. Drive out to enjoy a hike, a run, a casual walk at Towsley Canyon Park in Newhall. it's just off the I5 Freeway north. They park has ample parking. Yes, dogs are allowed on leash. If you have adventurous little ones, they will enjoy a portion of the hike. You do have some "good" climbs, so bring some water and maybe something to carry you across the loop hikes. Or, you can go to you feel it's time to turn around and go back and see all that you missed while you were hiking up the trail. All ages hike up here and you can take the full trails either way, or there are even shorter trails available. Check the website for more details. We have been there a number of times and we see runners, day hikers, and visitors from out of the country who made Towsley a "bucket list" hike. There are restrooms, drinking water, and great views to see. Also, this was an area where they searched for oil many years ago. As you are walking up the trail, you will see bubbling oil and signs of what it took to find oil when Newhall was still being settled many years ago. The hillsides show the evolution of the area too. I even found a shark's tooth on one of my visits. So, sites...yes. Views...yes. A good hike...oh, yes. So, there you have it...you have to take the drive. After your adventure at Towsley, drive a little further up north on the I5 and you will find all sorts of shopping and restaurants. Hey, this could a be nice day for a drive and dine! Enjoy.

My mom and I (both residents of Santa Clarita for 20+ years) stopped by for a Sunday afternoon tour of Hart's home. We were pleasantly surprised to see not only the beautiful house itself, but also the outstanding Western artwork inside. What a fantastic collection- some of the artwork in here (Remingtons, Russells, etc) is truly world-class- a hidden gem right in our backyard we had never seen before! Our tour guide Evan was kind and helpful and the security guard, Alex, was also extremely knowledgeable about the artwork and museum. They graciously answered our questions and were very accommodating. Thank you both!

Oak Tree Gun Club

Reviewed By Yenom99 - Edmonton, Canada

Went to California to do the regular theme park stuff but my 13 year old wanted to try some handguns so away we went. We are from Canada where only cops and criminals have hand guns so we decided to head here to try our hand at pistol shooting. We both have experience with shotguns and long barrels but not handguns. I was intimidated when I first entered as I had never held a handgun in my life. The staff here was friendly, helpful and suggested some good guns to try. So after we picked out our first of three different guns we were off to the range. The gentleman overseeing the pistol range was awesome. He was helpful, knowledgeable and strict with safety which I really liked. My son and I fired off somewhere around 300 - 400 rounds with a 9mm, .38 and a .44 magnum. By the end, with his help, I was grouping my shots very well and tight. The ONLY issue we had was that we wanted to go to the rifle range once we wrapped up with the pistols but apparently on Wednesdays between 5-6 (we got there at 5:05), they are closed to the public. There is nothing about this on the website which I do think they should correct. So, we ended up leaving before we got to try some uber cool rifles. Even with this disappointment I still give this 5 stars as the rest of the experience was really great. Go and enjoy!!!

Santa Clarita Woodlands Park

On the north-facing flank of the Santa Susana Mountains, the numerous canyons of Santa Clarita Woodlands Park contain globally unique combinations of tree species, perennial streams, spring wildflower displays, and abundant wildlife. Even black bears and mountain lion roam here--only a few miles away from the urbanized San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys.

Reviewed By SoCalRambler

Most people do the Mulally loop trail over the mountain, but be sure to check out the newer Elder trail that winds to the north from the visitor center / picnic area back to the parking lot. Not only is this a gentle, meandering trip suitable for all ages (spoiled only by cyclists who are eroding the trail badly with their tires) but the hills are abundant with lupine flowers in the spring since last year's fire. Watch the slopes carefully: Those whitish specks in the soil are likely fossils (see photos) -- 5 to 10 million years old. Also of note: fantastic rock formations in "the narrows," gooey oil seeps and oil drilling artifacts, abundant bird life, plenty of deer and even bears. We also like to count the lizards that stand on the boulders that line the road coming in (record count so far, 99.) New parking has been added (you can also pay to park further in by the ranger house / vis ctr but hardly anyone does that.) The park is getting more and more popular -- 2 years ago we'd see maybe 6 cars in the lot. Now on a typical Saturday you see almost 100. Sigh. They are also developing the park in the near future (look up Rivendale Park and Open Space on the Santa Clarita Hiking website for updates, as well as good trail maps.) For more info on geology, history and artifacts, search on Elsmere Canyon dot com (or simply "Towsley Canyon geology.") Best website on the area, hands down.
