National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

Reviewed By LMS0305 - Memphis, Tennessee

The museum is MASSIVE, and there are more planes, military equipment and uniforms, and war artifacts to count. To try to read everything would take hours! The best part about the museum is admission is free! You will definitely get good exercise just walking throughout the space, but prepare for long walks for small kids and those with mobility challenges (I believe there are strollers and scooters available in the lobby) There are several planes in hangar 4, including a few Air Force One, that can be walked through, but the spaces are very narrow, which I can see problematic for larger or older individuals. There are opportunities for flight simulators geared towards older children and adults. My two toddlers (ages 4 and 3) had a great time seeing all the planes, but I wish there were more interactive exhibits/exhibits children could sit in, that would entertain smaller kids. Def recommend for Dayton visitors and history buffs!

Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House

The Westcott House was built in 1908 for Burton J. And Orpha L. Westcott. The Westcott property is the only Prairie style house designed by Wright in the state of Ohio. The grounds include the main house and a garage with pony stable connected by an extensive pergola. In 1946, due to the housing crisis following World War II, the house was divided into multiple apartments. The house no longer reflected the vision of its architect. The original furniture and most of the original light fixtures and other details were removed from the house. Lack of resources led to an extreme deterioration of the structure. The house has recently undergone an inch-by-inch $5.8 Million restoration. Each of its features-from art glass to original hardware and hand-decorated encaustic walls to massive urns-has been returned to its 1908 appearance. Furniture has been rebuilt according to Wright's specifications and gardens re-landscaped in keeping with the time. The house in now manages by a non-profit organization. Our mission is to preserve and interpret the Westcott House, promote historic preservation and inspire creativity and innovation through architecture and design education. In addition to tours of Wright's masterpiece, Westcott Center for Architecture + Design offers innovative educational programming throughout the year, including Summer Walking Tour Series. Take a guided tour of the Westcott House and learn about the Prairie Style home Frank Lloyd Wright designed for industrialists and entrepreneurs Burton J. And Orpha Westcott and their two children. Experience Frank Lloyd Wright's timeless designs and a world-class restoration project.

Our docent was very informative - knew a lot about the residence and it's history and showed great interest in Frank Lloyd Wright. While not my favorite Frank Lloyd Wright creation, I still enjoyed the visit. I was a bit disappointed that the fabric awnings were not up as you see in most pictures.

Stairs are present on the tour. Wear a good pair of walking shoes. You do get to see the entire residence. Bathroom/gift shop/check-in at the garage area. Both indoor/outdoor tour. Do note pictures are not allowed on the interior, but are allowed on the exterior. Was advertised at an hour, but we were definitely over 1.5 hours long.

Enjoy!

Indian Creek Distillery

Reviewed By gypsyflyaway - Ohio

This beautiful property has been in the same family since 1818, and was developed as a grist mill and distillery. They produce a wonderfully flavorful rye whiskey.
The still closed down during prohibition, but were re-constructed in 2011.

They are the only family owned historic artisan farm distillery in the United States using the old fashioned double copper distilling method.

Fun, historic, tour. Takes just about an hour, maybe a little longer.

Brandeberry winery

Stopped here after a visit to Yellow Springs.. Really nice variety of wines but honestly did not really feel like anyone was overly friendly. We had done a lot of walking so just decided to do tastings at a table instead of the bar so not sure if that was it..but since there were only like 8 people there...it definitely wasn't because they were busy. One friend stood up waiting for a tasting for 5 mins and none of the 2 or 3 behind the bar waited on him. We did not expect them to come to the table so we went back up when we were ready for the next one..but no one was overly friendly or welcoming..doubt we will return. Just very different from other small wineries we frequent where the owners are so happy you are there!

Fulton Farms

Reviewed By mnnofziger - Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Fulton Farms is known for their corn. I'm from the area but moved away about 15 years ago. When I come back to visit family I like to visit Fulton Farms. Today I stopped in for sweet corn, tomatoes & peaches. The place hardly seams an attraction anymore. I walked in and was greeted by no-one. I picked through peaches that should have been ate days ago that were still full price, picked through corn that was mostly bad and found some nice tomatoes. When I checked out there were 2 young girls paying more attention to a cell phone and chatting among each other that didn't really seam to care about giving good customer service. Neither girl could look at me or hand me my receipt, just kept talking to each other and laid my receipt on the counter while my hand was out. I can't say I'm in a hurry to return. This trip to Fulton Farms really was a disappointment. Yes, the corn tasted good but the experience doesn't seam worth it.

My husband and I started the 2018 with a hike to the Charleston Falls Preserve. It was gorgeous and breath taking. Especially when we walked down the path near the falls. How can that much water freeze in mid air? It was magnificent.

Went to a Brian Culbertson/George Clinton concert at the Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio and boy was I surprised. I have never been in an outdoor fully covered concert venue with fans turning to keep things cool! The venue was wonderful. Brian Culbertson was awesome as usual! George Clinton, not so much. The event staff were excellent taking care of two elderly aunts in the disabled seating section. Loved the venue!

Hiked around G H today and throughly enjoyed it. Not very crowded on a Wednesday morning, and got to witness some beautiful scenery. The woman at the nature center was very helpful, and the raptor center is well worth the hike. Crowded on weekends but if you go during the week, you feel that you have the whole place to yourself. $5 parking(entry fee) exact amount helps a lot. Enjoy
