Naumburg Cathedral

A beautiful Gothic castle with an elaborately carved facade: a fine example of architecture and stonework in the Middle Ages.

Reviewed By Texprof - Austin, Texas

Church in reverse, in the sense that the building is now owned by a private foundation and the local Lutheran church rents it for use. There are some significant art works left for viewing, but the building lacks much of its earlier grandeur. Still, it's worth the fee to see what Bamberg's cousin in the East looks like. Fortunately I was staying at a place only 15 kilometers away, but I would have driven many miles to see it.

I stumbled across this system for concentrating salt for extraction back in 1995 and took my family back to see it this year. It shows the cleverness of engineers from centuries past and it still works! Both the condensing tower and the pump house can be visited, along with viewing the water wheel-powered beams that drive the whole system and come up from the river. The hostess in the pump house had a very nice presentation in English too.

Nice guided tour in historical buildings showing wine making with s twist or two. Interesting to see the arrested development during Communist days, when near century-old machinery was used for lack of funds and innovation. They make nice sparkling wine these days though!

Irrgarten Eckartsberga

Einzigartig in ihrer tatsächlichen Natürlichkeit.

Although there are plenty of opportunities to view or ride on trams in the former East Germany, this is rather unique as it is a small single tram car that operates every 30 minutes from the station to the centre of town - passing the depot where further examples of these trams can be seen.

Come and spend a morning (or afternoon) wandering Schloss Neuenstein. It's an easy drive from Naumburg or you can catch the quaint Burgenlandbahn to Freyburg. The Schloss can't be missed high up on the nearby hill. For the entry price you get a professionally presented series of exhibits covering the history of the schloss and the various rooms including a series of Baroque salons. There is also a reasonable clock museum and an odd 'packaging' exhibition at the time of writing. Take your time and soak up the atmosphere. Recommended.

Landesweingut Kloster Pforta

The biggest winery of Saale-Unstrut with 16 varietals to choose from. Located just along the Saale-River visit via boat, bike, car or hike your way along one of the many trails. Relax and refresh at the winery's restaurant "Saalhauser Weinstuben". Or have a personal tour and wine-tasting.

This establishment is listed as a vineyard but what I toured was the old Kloster itself. This Kloster dates way back and had two classes of monks: scholars and winegrowers. It is now a highly-regarded preparatory academy. Its most famous graduate is Friedrich Neitzsche. I was fortunate to be toured though the Kloster by one of its recent graduates. She took me there on a Sunday so that we would not disturb the students. There is a gift shop and book/wine store on the premises which may be open every day. On that Sunday several groups of people were looking about the grounds. We saw the stunning chapel interior and the room where misbehaving students were once kept in solitary confinement. There is a cemetery behind the Kloster with some very old graves and also memorials to more recent graduates who met untimely deaths. There is a large out building that dates back a century or so that served an unknown purpose. This property is worth a visit but I cannot tell others how much can be seen without the fortunate connection I had.

Perhaps the highlight of the church was the stone sculptures in the choir at the West End, but unfortunately the lighting was so poor that they were a disappointment. Perhaps the money made from the entrance charges should be used to improve the lighting.

As we have waited for a restaurant to open, we have decided to go for few drinks to Rotkappchen Sektkeller, it was a good decision. They have had different types of sparkling wine, even a mocha flavoured one. Really worth a try if you like sparking wine.
