Nakhon Phanom (Thai: นครพนม, pronounced [ná(ʔ).kʰɔ̄ːn pʰā.nōm]) is a town (thesaban mueang) in north-eastern Thailand, capital of Nakhon Phanom Province. The town covers the whole tambon Nai Mueang and Nong Saeng and parts of tambon At Samat and Nong Yat, all of Mueang Nakhon Phanom district. As of 2006 it had a population of 27,591. The town is 736 km north-east of Bangkok.

I was fortunate enough to have a personal guide who told me about the history of this beautiful Temple. Reality is this is just not another Temple.
Inside is a bone of the original Buddha. That's historic.
I also learnt about some wreckage of this temple a few years ago and its rebuilding.
Of course you have to remove your shoes to go around, but it's well worth it. I did the customary 3 laps in bare feet on a stinking hot day, however they do have mats on the ground to prevent your feet from burning.
If you are in this part of Thailand you really must go to Wat Maha That Temple.

Beuatiful River walk. It's clean and there are NO vendor booths selling junk. I don't know how they did it, but I like it. Every other place in Thailand if there is something pretty, nice, and open it gets trashed by a 1000 street vendors. I did not see a single one. Just a beautiful, clean river walk. Thank you to the NKP local government to great idea.

not to far out of town, though will need transport, or a nice bicycle ride. the place is to be taken with a grain of salt. some nice photos, and of course, his desk and chair, along with that coconut tree he planted..............hmm.
some old photos of him, not sure if worthy of a special trip, but if in the neighborhood.
been there a couple times, so it interest me, though now have a clone in Udon Thani, where he never visited, but hey, if brings in a few baht...........LOL

The photos and reviews written are about two different buildings. One building is on the river. It is now a museum, but used to be the provincial governor's mansion. It is very interesting to learn about the fire boat processions, the various tribal / ethnic groups that have settled in the area, and other historical aspects, so it is highly recommended to visit the museum.
The much larger building, which is located near the city pillar, is a library and unless you are proficient in written Thai, it is not worth a visit unless you are keenly interested in colonial style buildings.

The church is ordinary building that serves its purpose, but the former residents of the abbot is very interesting, it is colonial style building with it looked very charming, there's nothing much on the ground to see but it is still interesting to visit the place.

Excellent aquarium with a selection of Freshwater fishes from the Mekong Basin. Some spectacular tanks with large species such as the Giant Chao Praya Catfish (wrongly displayed as Giant Mekong Catfish - it is not !!), Giant Carp, and so on. Very much worth a visit, you can easily spend a couple of hours there. I loved it !
Entrance fee 30 Bht.

I had never been to this particular Wat (Temple) before. This is the most northern of the five temples on what I call "Temple Road." It is within easy walking distance from the Indochine Market another popular tourist attraction in Nakhon Phanom on the banks of the Mekong River. This Wat has two famous statues of Buddha worth seeing but they are housed behind a stainless steel structure to protect them. The grounds and buildings are well kept and worth the visit.

Very pictures temples all along the river about six or more starching a good mile or three all painted in reds gold white very impressive well worth seeing the culture

On the walking street of Nakhon Phanom. It was built by the Vietnamese resident at Nakhon Phanom before they return to their homeland in 1960 as a gift of remembrance for the people of Nakhon Phanom who has been hospital to them during their stay in the city.
