Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

Reviewed By B1714D - Belgrade, Serbia

If you've visited first the uphill Jvari Church (see that review of mine), the most striking edifice you see from its view point is this Cathedral. The Svetitskhoveli is the second largest Georgian Church, after the Sameba Holy Trinity in Tbilisi which was built only ten years ago, meaning that Svetitskhoveli was the largest one for 1000 years, as it was built in 11th cent in classic medieval Georgian style.
The Cathedral is built on a site of a 4th cent wooden Church, which remnants are still preserved and visible inside the Cathedral today.
Adding the beauty of its interior is the replica of the Jerusalem's Holy Sepulcher chapel, which was built inside the Cathedral in 15 cent. The Cathedral served in the middle ages as the main Georgian Orthodox one, so many Georgian kings were crowned and buried here.

En route to Kazbegi and after stopping awhile at Zhinzavali Water Reservoir, our next stop was at Ananuri Fortress. A must-stop place to walk into the fortress to see the amazing ancient structure. The path leading the fortress entrance is a steep passage with small souvenir shops at its either side giving it an attractive and appealing touch.

Gudauri Ski Resort

Reviewed By Jon H - Markham, Canada

We went as a group of 7, some beginners and some advanced or at least skied or snowboarded before.
They have instructors that can give you lessons...they're about 35-45 GEL each hour...which is not bad.
They also have paragliding (250 GEL) and snowmobiling.
They got a handful of chairlifts that go very high up the mountain. When we went to the top, it was very foggy so we had pretty much zero visibility but the staff are nice and they have staff going down the slopes consistently to make sure no one goes off the course.
They got restaurants and bars throughout the slopes and stalls with mulled wine which is awesome after snowboarding.
The only thing is after we left this resort...after a few weeks, there was a big chairlift accident where the chairlifts malfunctioned and started going backwards at high speeds. A few people got injured and no one died so that's good. Just ask the staff ahead of time to make sure all is safe! Also...ski passes were 40 GEL for a full day (10am til 5pm)

Chateau Mukhrani

Fit for Royalty; Chateau Mukhrani was founded on the tradition of winemaking in the Mukhrani area of Georgia dating back in millennia. It is the original Georgian Royal Chateau, and the only Chateau to unite four key components: the Vineyard, the Winery, the Chateau and the Winemaking history. The history of winemaking at Chateau Mukhrani started in 1878 when the first vintage was released. It was Ivane Mukhranbatoni, a descendant of the Bagrationi Royal Family, who, after returning home from France in 1876 where he learnt about the fine art of winemaking in the Bordeaux and Champagne regions, decided to introduce the concept of a Chateau in Georgia. He introduced the then contemporary winemaking methods that were already widely used in Europe, and started producing wonderful Georgian wines on the ancestral Mukhrani Estate. Chateau Mukhrani has become renowned around the world for its splendid Chateau and Cellars, wonderful Gardens and pristine vineyards. The harmonious symbiosis between fertile soils and history, traditions and modern techniques, has created the masterpiece that we call Chateau Mukhrani wines. Chateau Mukhrani Wine Tours Chateau Mukhrani is one of the must-visit venues to get a fascinating insight into the traditions and secrets of Georgian winemaking, blended with remarkable stories about the Georgian Royal family. Fabulous castle and cellars, wonderful Gardens and vineyards – this is what makes Chateau Mukhrani famous. This is a Place You Should Visit! Advanced Reservations are more than desired.

Uplistsiche Cave Town

Reviewed By DaisyQ3 - Port Macquarie, Australia

Quite an awesome experience wandering through this site that dates back to the early iron age where archaeologists have discovered evidence of both pagan and Christian architecture and rituals
You need a guide to point out things like the ancient ceiling decorations and to explain the rock formations indicating areas such as the apothecary, jail, bakery and wine pit.
Not for the faint-hearted or unsteady, visiting this site involves climbing quite a few stairs and scrambling over rocks.
A unique experience, certainly worth a visit.

Abudelauri lakes

Reviewed By GeoGuide - Tbilisi, Georgia

From Tbilisi village Roshka is only 110 km, but the roads are so rough , that it takes you 3 to get there. Especially, when you leave the main road and turn left towards village. There is a place only for 1 car :) Therefore, if there is a second car driving towards you, than it is a traffic already :) Village itself is very small and scenic. After around 2 hours walking time, you will see first wonder- Green Abudelauri lake. It is really Green, thanks to greenery under the water and around it. In 5 minutes after the Green lake, you see the Blue lake Abudelauri. It is something special! Have no words to describe. You just want to sit and stare into the blue. Water is extremely cold, but there is always one person in a group, who will try to swim there :)))) The third - The White lake Abudelauri is more 30 minutes walking time up the hill. The color is milky white :) Trekking there is fabulous, but if you are lazy, you can hire a horse from the locals ( 50 Gel ) and enjoy riding :)
This tour a full day tour from Tbilisi. Highly recommend it to nature lovers! Great place to visit.

Great place to go. Accessible by public transport, mashrutka on certain days only, this place is brilliant. Worth speanding time in, wandering around, soaking up atmosphere. Don't forget to walk down the road, see the hoodoos on the other side of the river, visit the bone place where plague-infected locals went to die. Then take a day to walk up the road to the next fortified village , further but more remote, and even better.

Mount Kazbek

Reviewed By Mina G - Tehran Province, Iran

Kazbek is the second highest mountain of Georgia. I joined this climb with national mountaineering team of Iran in May, it was winter condition and stormy.
I do not suggest normal trekkers to go in spring, the best season is June to September.
In spring the Glacial slots are hidden yet which makes it very dangerous to trek on glaciers.
There are several guest houses in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi district) we stayed in a very normal cheap house and prepared the food ourselves. We did not went with a local guide but in case of bad weather it is not really easy to find the path because the mountain has huge landscape.
If you love to climb 5-thousand peaks I suggest you to try Volcanic Mount Damavand,5610 in Iran.

Jvari Church

It stands stately on a hill prominent enough to be seen by the whole city of Mtskheta. The interior's painting hasn't stood the ravages of time but its exterior is majestic when illuminated at night.
The cold was biting on December 28 but the view of Mtskheta from the top is picture perfect.
