Centre Ville

Reviewed By LucyD925 - San Diego, California

On our way back home from the gorges, we drove through this town and it was amazing! Very small town - with even smaller roads to drive through. The charm that this village exudes is beyond words. There were several little restaurants to grab a bite to eat and shops with lots of lavender goodies and ceramics. There also were tons of Fountains with cold water to drink and cool down - on a 37 degree day, they were heaven sent. If you are in the area - it definitely is a must see!

Gorges du Verdon

Europe's only grand canyon.

Reviewed By Minackman - Cornwall

We have been meaning to visit the Gorges du Verdon for years and at last we made it on a sunny day that set off the soft autumn colours. For us the experience was superb, but it is easy to imagine these tortuous, narrow roads full of impatient tourists in high summer.
We went along the left bank from the Baclons de Mescla, past the Pont de l'Artuby, through the Corniche Sublime and the charming village of Aiguines down to the blue, blue Lac de Sainte Croix. From there we climbed back up to Moustiers-Ste-Marie and returned on the right bank by a rather wider road.
We stopped in many places and took lots of photos which really cannot do justice to this stunning natural wonder. Do it out of season, if you can, but do it!

Route des Cretes La Palud

Reviewed By Al M - Marseille, France

A must see drive when you are in this area. We took the clockwise route from the village of Palud (follow the sign) which went for about 7 km and then there was a "no entry" sign saying that the road was closed. However, we observed numerous local people drive around the sign and continue, so we did too. We found no problem at all with the road all the way back to the village of Palud. I have no idea why the sign was there.
The scenery is stunning. At the second panoramic stop, we saw a total of seven Golden Eagles who were flying directly in front of us. It was truly amazing.
The road does wind with sharp turns and some places where there are no barriers between the road and the drop off to the valley floor. However, I never felt like it was dangerous in anyway.
Definitely one of the sites to see in the south of France with many points where you can park and then walk over and look down into the gorge and see the river below.

Notre Dame de Beauvoir

Reviewed By juliethetraveller123 - Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

After climbing the 262 steps of a well worn path you reach the small chapel overlooking the village. The seven oratories that lined the track in 1860 to the fourteen stations of the Cross.
Built in the late twelfth century in Romanesque and Gothic periods, the chapel includes the Gothic choir added in 1536, the date engraved on the triumphal arch. Beautiful stained glass windows are amazing.
The view over the pantile rooftops to the surrounding countryside is worth the effort. On our descent it started to rain, the well worn limestone path was slippery so the hand rail was very helpful.
Car parking is abundant nearby, small charge but worth using as very close proximity to facilities.

Verdon-e-Bike

Reviewed By Kitzy97 - Belmont, MA

Gorge du Verdon is a very beautiful place! Very spread out over many miles and a lot of hiking. We hiked while we were there and then we found Verdon-e-Bike!!!! If you only do one thing while you are in Palud sur Verdon make POSITIVE SURE that you rent an E-bike from these folks. They are so nice and helpful. We were there today (October 1, 2015) and it is slow season, but they had bikes for us to rent. We did the Route de Cretes (24 kilometers) and it was just breathtaking! So much better on bike than a car. The electric bikes were a breeze. You can easily stop at each lookout (belvedere) and really see the Gorge. It was extremely reasonably priced and well worth it! We are a couple in our early 60's so if we can do it, you can too! Go to Verdon-e-bike and rent one!! You can ask about them in the Tourism office, or look for one of their signs around town. What wonderful people! They really want you to have a good time and we did! It took us about 2 1/2 hours to slowly do the Route de Crete. Great views!

I just moved to Nice, France in August and thought it would be a wonderful experience to explore Provence, and in particular, the Verdon Gorge area. I had read that the drive to the Verdon Gorge was a bit terrifying, so I thought that hiring a driver would be the best option. After some research I found Getaway in Provence and sent an email about different options for transportation and tours in Provence. Auriane, the owner of Getaway in Provence, was immediately timely and responded back quickly. I gave her very vague information as to what we were looking to do, as I was unsure of the options, and she provided multiple choices. Additionally, a couple of times we changed our mind, and Auriane was always so understanding, flexible and accommodating. Auriane was very cognizant about my budget constraints (I just started back at school fulltime) and worked with me on the best options.
We ended up choosing the transportation services to and from Nice to Moustiers Sainte Marie, as well as a Verdon Gorge tour and a winery visit. The vehicle for transportation was a comfortable ride, and the conversation with Auriane made it go quickly. She has a lot of insight into Provence, and her beautiful hometown that we stayed in, Moustiers Sainte Marie. We spent two nights in Moustiers Sainte Marie and found it absolutely charming. The people were so kind, the village was very quaint, there was phenomenal hiking, and the food and wine were spectacular. Auriane provided us input of what we should do during our stay: where to eat, good hiking trails, where we could rent a bike to go to Lake Sainte Croix.
The Verdon Gorge tour that we went on provided stunning views. Auriane knew the timing of when to go as far as missing crowds and the best hour of the day for sunlight, etc. On the tour we stopped at a beautiful spot for coffee, saw mountain goats, as well as birds. The views were simply stunning. After the tour, we went to a winery for a visit that we thoroughly enjoyed. I am still dreaming of the tasty Rose I had :).
After the winery visit, Auriane brought us back to Nice. She was so kind and sincere - she told me if I needed any recommendations on where to go in Provence, or anything while I was in France period, to let her know. I would DEFINITELY recommend Getaway in Provence to anyone - I can't think of one negative thing about our experience. The visit to Moustiers Sainte Marie and our tour with Auriane have been the highlight of my time in France so far. It is also important to note that Auriane offers the best prices for transportation from Nice - I looked into multiple options before I booked my visit. Thank you Auriane, for the unforgettable time!
