If you are staying in boulougne sur mer then a trip to the historic town of Montreuil should be on your list. Fantastic medieval city walls that are free to roam around on. Picturesque tower. For an entrance fee you are able to enjoy the once formidable fortress. Parking by the church inside the city walls is best.

The Citadel was built on the fondations of an old royal castle built in the beginning of the 13th century facing the estuary of the river Canche. In 1567, the king of France Charles X decided to build a Citadel according to the latest defensive innovations, Between the 17th and the 19th centuries renovation works were carried out.The Citadel of Montreuil-sur-Mer represents seven centuries of architectural history.
We spent a good two hours visiting the Citadelle and thoroughly enjoyed the very informative commentary and the music on the free audio-guide. The exhibition about the bats was interesting but only in French. The First World War rooms provided excellent displays in French and English with clear texts and photos although the lighting had stopped working in one area. We would highly recommend visiting the Citadelle.

The tourist office of Montreuil-sur-Mer (Opale Coast) welcomes you all year long. Enjoy heritage and gastronomy in the fortified town.
The people at the desk of the Tourist info are very kind and helping. But most interesting here is the start of the 3 km walk along the rampart, offering a great view on the city and (especially) the landscape outside the city.

Church of the ancient monastery Saint-Saulve, dated from the 13th and 16th centuaries
Montreuil has found overnight fame after finishing runner up of "France most beloved villages". This abbatiale being the city center landmark, it's one of the few places that ought to be visited in the city center, although unimpressive. Entrance is free, so there's nothing to regret once you've closed the door and left...

The Chapel Saint-Nicolas was the chapel of the Hôtel-Dieu hospital of Montreuil-sur-Mer. It's dated from the 15th century and be restaured during the 19th century by Clovis Normand.
This historic chapel is located on the place Gambetta right next to the church and has recently undergone renovations. Limited opening times. Parking available in the small square.

Standing in front of the municipal theatre, the equestrian statue of Field Marshal Douglas Haig (Commandant-in-Chief of theBritish Army during the Great War) is one of the few reminders of the pivotal role played by the peaceful town of Montreuil during the Great War. This statue was made in 1931 by Paul Landowski, the french sculptor of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.
As Commander of British Forces on the Western Front during the Great War, Haig established his Headquarters in the town and this mounted life size statue is a tribute to those facts. Facing the market square from across a small fountain/water feature this well maintained statue is a credit to the town for keeping it in such good condition with not a sign of ill informed graffiti. It's unfortunate the lettering on the base of the plinth is not very well picked out and so difficult to read.

Un festival de grande qualité, en plein coeur du mois d’août, mêlant, théâtre, opéra et musique "dans le goût français". Ne ratez pas ses délicieuses sérénades après les spectacles.

Corn exchange reconverted to theater before the World War I. This public institution proposes all year long a wide choice of professional shows (Les Malins Plaisirs, The cultural Season) and amateurs and numerous of films projections.
