Washington Monument State Park

Reviewed By 866TaylorB - Chicago, United States

Curiously, a section of the Appalachian Trail runs through Washington Monument State Park and is used by visitors to access the 40-foot-tall tower honoring George Washington. The park, which covers 191 acres and was established in 1934, is a public recreation area located about four miles east of Boonsboro, Maryland, easily accessible for people who plan to visit Antietam National Battlefield. The Washington Monument, which sits near the summit of South Mountain's Monument Knob, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Built in 1827, the original tower was the first monument dedicated to the first President of the United States. The Washington Monument in Baltimore are completed two years later and the more famous Washington Monument in Washington DC was not completed until 1885. During the Civil War, the monument was used as a signal station for the Union Army. Today, a museum in the park's visitor center features exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the area. Picnicking facilities also are available.

Off the beaten path but definitely worth the trip. The small-batch ciders and perry are all made from locally grown certified organic fruits. The restored barn turned tasting room has plenty of charm and great views of the farm and the rolling hills of Frederick County. You can see, and purchase, pottery and artwork from local artists and occasionally catch a house concert while you enjoy a drink. Bring a picnic if you're looking to eat, they're not licensed to sell food. The owners are very friendly. Eric will even indulge the questions about orchards and apple varieties from an aspiring home cider maker. A must stop for any cider enthusiast.
