It is a little bit difficult to find. There are not enough signs to guide you. You have to ask locals several times. While walking on the road to the museum, when you see a small park like place with roses on your left, climb up.

Katogi Averoff Winery

The Katogi Averoff winery is in Metsovo, a mountain village built some 1100 metres above sea-level. The oldest parts of the winery date back to 1973, when work began on a new building required to cover the company's ever-increasing production needs. Its cellars can boast over 1200 oak barrels in which our red wines mature, while the winery shop offers rare and collectible bottles of wine for sale from its 1974 vintage on. A guided tour of the winery employs a range of audio-visual media to offer the visitor an original introduction to wine production and the history of the winery, and is rounded off with tastings of a selection of Katogi Averoff wines.

What a beautiful area this is, simply stunning, and it's not just the lake, the flora and fauna around is amazing, so many different wild flowers and birds abound here which, coupled with such delightful mountain scenery provide something to remember forever, if you are in the area this place is a must. A word of warning though is the dogs used to round up the sheep can be really quite aggressive so do beware of these quite nasty creatures.

A 30-minute walk from the SW corner of the main square of Metsovo (and a steep climb back up!) brings you to this charming 14th century monastery with magnificent frescoes from the 17th century and a beautiful carved and gilded iconostasis. The resident female caretaker shows you around and manages to communicate the salient points with gestures and a smattering of various other European languages. No photography permitted once inside.

Katara Pass

Reviewed By greekcypriot2009 - GREECE&CYPRUS

It is a mountain pass 5 km northeast of Metsovo. The road can become extremely dangerous in winter when there is snow so drivers should be way too careful and alert.
Nowadays after the New Egnatia highway was constructed it is not that bad. Of course at some points the road is quite narrow so overpassing is quite difficult and if travelling by coach like we did, it is even harder.
Take it easy and enjoy the ride if you happen to be driving out there. Metsovo and the round area is breathtaking.

The product is good the prices are crazy. I'm in the cheese business, and some of the most famous French, Swiss, and Italian cheeses are far less expensive. The Metsovo cheeses are well made and quality, but their price far outweighs the pedigree and quality.
