Double Decker Living Root Bridge

Reviewed By Shashwati R

The double decker root bridge is definitely unique and the hike is quite beautiful too - if you're up for it. The first and last part of the trek are the most difficult, with about 1500 steep, continuous steps down a hill that keep going on and on. After that, you come across a village and the steps are a little more staggered. Then, you cross two streams, one on a shaky, narrow cable bridge and one on a broader, steadier bridge. And then you climb about 1/3 of another hill and THEN you reach Nongriat, the village where the double decker root bridge is located.
Both bridge and journey are beautiful with mountainous vistas, pristine streams and dense jungle. But getting there definitely requires both mental and physical stamina, so know your physical limits and come prepared. Water and snacks are available on the way, and there is maggi at Nongriat. Good sports shoes are essential for the tourist, and hiking sticks, which you can rent for Rs.20 at the entrance, are highly recommended. Guides are also available for Rs.600 but for just the root bridge, they're really not necessary because there is just one defined path.
It took us about 2 hours to go down and 2.75 hours to come down but we saw younger groups (one member of our party was in her fifties) go down in about an hour and come back in 1.5 hours.

This is in the less travelled Jaintia Hills. The landscape you find on the journey makes this worth the while. The Falls themselves are approachable only by going down a steep trail with stone steps. It does take some effort, but lovely once you are down.

This forest remains unchanged since last 800 years... yes, thats what we were told by our guide... ancient rituals were conducted here long ago and once it discontinued, everything in the forest remains untouched...
One has to take a local guide to enter the forest...it was quiet, a bit foggy (when we went there) and silent... perfect setting for a horror genre movie... but we loved it... we even tried our hands playing tarzan on a hanging root from a tree...
Overall, a mesmerizing place... you don't want to miss it... :)
Outside the forest there is a small shop serving local delicacies, maggi and tea/coffee...
