Burr Oak Winery

Upon entering we were not greeted until after walking around the "gift" area for 5 or so minutes. The lady behind the counter was serving another couple and didn't seem to care we were there. After finally given the details about the place (only 2 complimentary wine tastes, must pay if you want more) we decided to pay for the 8 tastings as we thought it would be fun. Think again... The lady serving us did not seem to want to be there at all, we felt like we inconvenienced her. We were done with our tasting in 10 minutes. It was so rushed and not a great experience at all. So disappointing! You're obviously going to get mostly tourists here and need to have a friendly atmosphere and staff to keep people coming and recommending to other travelers. I'll never return!

We've been coming here for years. The trail rides are nice & reasonably priced. Horses are friendly & you feel safe. This year they've begun trying to up-sell and it is annoying. They don't just accept "no thanks". Tried to sell T-shirt, picture frame, key chains, horse treats to each I said no thanks. Then heard several times how the horses are "starving" & need treats. Raised on the ride & after as well. Not sure if we will come back because of this. If your horses are starving, that's on you!

Castle Rock County Park

Just back for a few days camping in the park and boating on Castle Rock Lake. The campground was clean and well organized, not too terribly full. Pit toilets and a shower building, remember to bring some quarters for the showers. Easy in and out on the boat launch, and plenty of dining surrounding the lake. The lake is a flowage fed by the WisconsinRiver, so it's murky and tea colored, but otherwise a great time!

Such a beautiful campground! Some Campsites are right on the lake - you have your own little beach! Bugs weren't too bad and we had beautiful weather so that makes a huge difference. Call ahead to check on bug situation. There were not many other people there and the campsites are very spacious and spread out- nice privacy between sites.

I rode this from Elroy to Camp Douglas and back. The surface was paved at one time and has deteriorated quite a bit. It is a pretty scenic ride for the most part, some boring stretches. Bring your own water as there is limited facilities along the way. There is no real hills to speak of so it is a pretty easy ride. Some areas the trail can be downright rough so a hybrid or mountain bike would be best.

Woodside Sports Complex

My son played in a large baseball tournament at this complex just last weekend. This complex has absolutely beautiful fields. The tournament director communicated updates and weather delays promptly . They could use some more shade but we fixed that ourselves by brining in pop up tents that we set up. They do say no carry ins but honestly that wasn't all that strictly enforced. My husband was able to bring in a large cooler of gatorade and water for our players and most other families brought in a cup of coffee or beverage and no one said anything. at no point did I see them searching wagons or purses for food. The food and drink they sell on property is of good quality as well. We will definitely be back to play up here again. They are in the process of building a hotel onsite which about half our team was able to stay in on short notice b/c one wing opened up early. The hotel is beautiful and you can walk to the fields from the hotel. It will be really nice once the hotel is finished.

The Red Geranium Framing and Gifts

A friend recommended that we should visit the Red Geranium while we were in Mauston. It was a very good recommendation. The Red Geranium is located on the frontage road just past McDonalds and Culvers in a 4300 sq ft, Meadow Valley log home called the Grande Valley - the architecture and design is worth the stop. We were greeted with a friendly welcome, "would you like a cup of coffee?" - "today, I have Door County Cherry Cream" - wonderful hospitality, with lots of tasty chips, crackers, and dips set on the large granite island in the kitchen. Each room was wonderfully festive for the holidays, nice to see the "art" of display is still alive and well. We have driven by the Mauston exit hundreds of times while on the interstate, exiting there to get gas or a fast food sandwich and have driven by the Meadow Valley log home, never taking the time to stop. Now we have a new reason to stop in Mauston - The Red Geranium - what a wonderful experience we had there, festive, friendly hospitality, and charming decor and gifts - we'll be back soon. Stop by the Red Geranium in Mauston if you are driving by - I'd like to know what you think.

My wife and I ventured out to Fawn Creek on a cold November afternoon. We were quickly warmed up by the friendliness of the staff at the winery. Fawn Creek has a majority of sweeter wines with a few off dry options. We were treated to a complimentary tasting of all of their varietals and found most to be very delicious. There was not a bad wine in the bunch, just some that I preferred more than others.

The winery also has some very unique gifts and some clothing for sale.

I would recommend a stop at Fawn Creek. We really enjoyed ours!

Sandy Shores Tubing

Sandy Shores Tubing offers a 3 mile river tubing adventure on the Wisconsin River. This section of river is secluded, lined with mature oaks and maples, sandy river bottom and secluded beaches. Keep your eyes open as you have a chance to spot the majestic Eagles and numerous other animals along the way. The float averages 2 1/2 hours if you float straight through. If you stop to enjoy the river, sun, and sandy beaches, you could make a day of it if you choose to. Our tubes are custom made. They have a can holder and also quick links to keep your group together. For the little river rats, we have tubes with a bottom and a backrest. As required by law, we provide everyone with a life vest, but you are more than welcome to bring your own. Our family owned business would be happy to help you plan your next river tubing adventure with us.

My husband and I went by ourselves on our first time on the river...that was our first mistake. The Wisconsin River was fun until the last 15 minutes of our trip. The current got so fast we couldn't control keeping away from the shoreline of trees. At one point, because of the current, we got wedged into a set of trees and were saved by a boat with two fishermen that pulled us out. As we continued around the very next corner, we could see the point at which we were suppose to get out for our ride back. We were about a half hour after time they said they would be there, but nobody was there yet to help us. We got caught in a current that started to pull us away from the landing spot. We were told there were some spots that were only 4ft, but could drop off to over 6ft. We took our chances and dismounted our tubes and stood on the ground fighting the current. We slowly made our way toward shore and the land dropped off and we knew we were in trouble because the current was forcing us away...then, by God's grace, my husband found another shallow area and caught us both. WE MADE IT TO LAND! My suggestion is bring your own body life jacket that straps across your waist. The ones they provide only go over your head...my husband's went sideways when we were in trouble and mine went up in my face, cause more issues then what we already had. We will never do this again!
