Virginia Museum of Natural History

Scale models of dinosaurs and actual tracks of these great beasts of the past are featured through innovative exhibits, lectures and educational activities.

Reviewed By Robin M - Kingsport, Tennessee

There were nice displays of dinosaurs and other critters found in Virginia. Plus you could also observe labs for paleontology and archaeology. My favorite displays were in the "Uncovering Virginia" gallery. The Grundy and Saltville exhibits were most interesting to me. Saw other families visiting and a number of children in the classrooms who were having fun.

Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail

Reviewed By Beth B - Ridgeway, Virginia

The Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail is a 4.5 mile long trail that runs through Martinsville, VA, and has two spur trails: the Silverbell Trail will take you up to the Piedmont Arts on Starling Avenue and the Uptown Connection Trail that will bring you up to Uptown and the Heritage Museum. It is an asphalt trail, reasonably level, and very beautiful. There are free little libraries and art work peppered along the trail, as well as marked and unmarked sites of interest, like DeShazo's Silo (marked on the Uptown Connection Trail) and an abandoned tressel with a grain spout (unmarked on the main part of the trail). There is a stream that runs beside the trail and it is heavily wooded so it is a great fall trip when the leaves are changing. Highly recommend getting one of the free bikes at the Bike Barn on the Doyle Street trailhead to ride the trail. Check the Henry County Bike Club website for current seasonal hours on the Bike Barn.

The staff here are very knowledgeable and friendly. If you will share your interests/hobbies with them, they will point you in the correct direction for events and places that mesh with your interests. Their displays change regularly and are almost a history lesson of businesses in the area. The NASCAR racing displays are my favorite.

We recently hosted a German exchange student and he really enjoyed their assistance in finding him places to go and things to do on the weekends. The restaurant coupons also came in handy.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor looking for local events....this is the place to go!

Rucker's is that rare combination of friendly staff and high quality merchandise. We comfortably browsed with no interference . Conversations were genuine with advice and direcions on everything from where to get a good meal to sites that matched our interests. The variety of items was impressive, the asking prices, especially on furniture, were way below my thoughts.

Smith River Outfitters

Reviewed By MarkHWilliams - Buford, Georgia

Read the pervious review and wondered if the review was accurate. Well after spending time with Smith River Outfitters I can tell you the review was spot on. Brian's knowledge of the river is impressive. He knows all the fishing holes where the bid ones hang. His knowledge of bait selection is again spot on. Spent three days fishing with this outfitter, we wade fished and road the raft he uses. The river is lovely and stunning in places. The people of Martinsville have no idea the beauty of the river that runs right through the area, if they knew more would fish and float the river. If you decide to fish or float the river I would highly recommend Smith River Outfitters, you will not be disappointed. I will use this service again and look forward to Brian the guide, he will keep you entertained with stories and he will put you on the fish. Take my advice and save yourself all the guess work use them for your next river adventure.

We were driving through Martinsville on the way to Roanoke and decided to check out the Museum of Natural History and happened into the brochure for this place which is like 2 minutes away. It is free of charge, though we recommend a small donation. Beautiful place, had several rooms full of Martinsville History. It is located in the courthouse, beautiful building full of character. There are stairs (no elevator) that lead into the courtroom and a small display with an awesome dollhouse...worth seeing for any child or adult. The exhibits are interesting and you can see it all within an hours time. There is a nice Veteran's Memorial there as well. We recommend a stop.
