Campus Martius Museum

This museum has great exhibits on local history dating from prehistoric times to 19th century and beyond. The colonial history is well presented as is the early settlement of the town. I found the Appalachian Migration exhibition downstairs of particular interest and very informative. It was well presented and highlighted the descendants of the Scots Irish who populated the Appalachian regions and their move from rural to urban environments- if you read "Hillbilly Elegy", this will fill in the gaps of history of which you may not have been aware. They have an excellent exhibit of how Americans innovated European technology to adapt to the New World, and some very interesting Civil War materials. I only wish I had more time to spend there!

I like historical cemeteries and I'm so glad we took to the time to visit the Mound Cemetery. There are brochures by the gate. We walked around the cemetery and to the top of the mound. It was very peaceful and thoughtful.

Oh, my - this place is a stunning example of the mid-1800's era. It is a restored home pertinent to the life lived in those times. From the early beginnings of a potters' cabin to the mansion it is today is a worth-while tour!!!! The guides were very knowledgeable. It was quite a surprise to start with the front door and end up back in time - to the potters original home. Quite an insight to save his contribution to history. There are a number of surprises within this tour. Not to be missed!!!!!

The highlight of this museum is the tour of an old steamship stern wheeler. You can only see it with a tour, so ask about that when you arrive. The rest of the museum is interesting and fun. Buy the ticket that also gets you in the Campus Maritus museum, so it's only $9 per person total.

Oak Grove Cemetery

Reviewed By Freeman-315 - San Diego, California

I don't know why I've grown intrigued and attracted to graveyards. Perhaps its my recent world travels and noticing of them, or perhaps its my older age preparing me for what's to come. In any case, after being born and raised in Marietta, I paid a visit to this cemetery for the first time since moving away almost 40 years ago. An hour there with friends didn't give me all of the inside scoop, like whether there's bathrooms or not, but it sure did impress me as a neat place worth visiting. The place is free of course, and there's usually adequate parking on the street near the entrance.

For those with loved ones buried here, it may seem like a solemn place. For me though, it was a park like area with amazing stones, people, and old history filling it. My friends and I looked for the oldest and neatest monuments, as one does at any graveyard, finding many (deaths) from the 1800's, but never succeeding to break the prior century. Still, there's enough of a mix of old, eroded flat stones, new gorgeous engraved monuments, and fancy towers to entertain one for hours. What distinguishes this graveyard though, is the natural setting.

The cemetery is well shaded, hilly, and offers wonderful paved paths suitable for walking or jogging. And in the middle, is a noticeable hill with a monument on top designating the cemetery. Most of all, the view and peacefull setting from this hill is mesmerizing. During my summer visit, I was still able to see part of the river and surrounding town hills. When the leaves drop though, I'm told that the view is panaramic and gorgeous. Here, on this hill top, is a wonderful place to come and enjoy peace, quiet, and maybe some prayer time with your maker. And if the prayers and surrounding stones below don't give you a better perspective of your problems, priorities, and values in life, then you can get your admission price back.

With all due respect for the many good people lying here, I believe they wouldn't mind having others appropriately enjoy their nice neighborhood. Whether you're a local seeking a good place to walk or a visitor looking for an outdoor activity in Marietta, this is a worthwhile, pleasant, easy, interesting, place to visit.

Historic Harmar Village

First I need to say that they have a strange schedule for when things are open.
- some shops open thurs-sun, May-December
- other shops are open Jan-Apr
The other attractions also had strange hours in different months so it would be best to check their website or call before you plan a trip to make sure you see what you are interested in.

The village offers the Historic Harmar bridge, speciality stores, antiques, museums, historical homes, dining and pubs. It was originally established in 1785 as Fort Harmar and has the only working hand operated railroad bridge in america. I loved their Train Station Antiques that is in 3 vintage railroad cars.

This museum was a bit of a disappointment; mainly because the price per person doesn't match the short amount of time most take to cover the various rooms. Four of us, all in the same family, went there thinking we could get the family rate of $10. Unfortunately it was explained we had to be immediate family and the lady wouldn't listen we were immediate family; just older. We decided not to argue over $6. The museum is in an old home and most items were donated by local residents. Some items are labeled. There were a few things we enjoyed looking at, but there just wasn't enough to constitute charging $4/person. Two in our family finished with the entire collection in about 15-20 minutes. The other two were done in 30-35 minutes. Several of us felt many items could be seen at an antique shop for free.
