We had a wonderful 4 days in Amarante staying at the Casa da Calcada Relais & Chateau. We had a magnificent view of the bridge and church opposite from our hotel window. The bridge is beautifully floodlit at night and pleasant to stroll across during the day despite the traffic. The town is not at all touristy and has a most relaxing atmosphere. We're only keen to go there again.

We toured Avelada Vineyard and thoroughly enjoyed the estate, the history and the friendly tour-guide, Renata. This estate has been producing wines for more than 300 years and now produce their own cheeses. At the end of the tour we sampled several of the white wines including a very nice reserve, along with their cheeses.
This is a "must visit" if you go to the Douro River valley. The scenery and Gardens are picturesque and on a sunny day, this visit will certainly please everyone.
Shopping in their store afterward is a treat as their prices on their wines, cheeses and ports are very reasonable as well.

Parque Aquatico Amarante

Reviewed By Hdevos - Grimbergen, Belgium

When we arrived the park was closed due to too many people. Advice was either to book upfront via Internet or come very early.
When we passed by about 20 minutes later we could enter the Water Park. No longer fully booked?
Once on the premises, the next challenge was to find a spot where we could have some place (not much). Try to visualize a place where seals or pjnguins build their nest and fight for their spot. Got it? Well, this is how it was.
About the slides, I think a total of 7 slides. Some very small and only about 3 interesting ones. So all those pinguins / seals queing up at those 3 slides.
4 pools, of which 3 for small kids. And in the afternoon some music and dance. Or reworded, lots of splashing and very loud.
In short, not the place to go to.

The N222 is one of the most beautiful highways with several places to stop along the way. Just west (ca. 5K) of Cinfaes is the small town of Pias... there are amazing hiking trips for all levels, but DO NOT miss out on the amazing swimming holes near the junction with CM1022... what a place for lunch (which for us ended up being many hours of mid-summer lazing)... cool waters, deeper and more shallow pools, cliffs of various heights to jump off of, tanning rocks... what a place... also a lesson in the local culture, as smaller groups of nearby residents (no tourists to be found) - families and teens - use the place as beach substitute and they are very open... we met some really neat people...

Quinta de Tormes, in Santa Cruz do Douro, by inheritance, belonged to the wife of the great novelist and writer Jose Maria Eca de Queiroz (Povoa de Varzim, November 25, 1845 - Paris, August 16, 1900).
Although he there had rarely set down roots, is here that he found a source of inspiration for the natural setting of one of his finest novels, "The City and the Mountains."/ " A Cidade e as Serras". This house-museum, where the writer spent some of his time, is preserved the estate of the writer, largely from the home of Neuilly in Paris, being exposed various personal objects, among which are, among other the cabinet (with key!) where Eça kept and organized notes sheets, that would be used in the writing process, the writing table where he wrote standing, eyeglasses, Fphotographs, prints and paintings, library with personal books... Feeling close the writer and feel his pulse is definitely an experience not to be missed, visiting Eca de Queiroz Foundation, based on this estate, which not only discloses how preserves the memory of the writer, involved in a landscape immortalized in his novel.

Monastery of the Saviour of Travanca

This monastic Church stands out within the Portuguese Romanesque heritage due to its unusual size, the importance of its sculptural decoration (namely the capitals) and the extraordinary tower with the beautiful portal depicting the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Founded within the sphere of influence of the Gascos (like the Monastery of Vila Boa do Bispo, in Marco de Canaveses), Travanca was one of the most important male monasteries in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho region in the Middle Ages and long after that period. This Monastery is part of the Route of the Romanesque.

The Foundation of this Monastery of the “Salvador de Travanca a Garcia Moniz” is going back into the second halve of the XI century. Throughout the middle Ages, Travanca will show a relevant influence: In the fourteenth century it stands out to have contributed with the high sum of 1800 pounds for the extraordinary tax in favour of the Crusades. It has been extinct in the year 1834. After this date, the Monastery falls into the darkness, returning to live for the community in the early twentieth century, through the restoration works of the General Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments and the installation of a hospital dependency in their spaces. On the 17th of January of 1916 the Monastery is being classified as a National Monument, and so improving the patrimonial and historical value of this Monastery for Portugal. And as usual on our visit of this location the church end Tower where closed, and for the rest it seems to be abandoned, you have so some houses next to the location, but it seems not to be the “Tourist Location”, it is a pain to see allot of this historical buildings abandoned and not taken care of or restored by the Portuguese government, who is always in need of money, but for to do what with it?
The only way to visit the inside is to make an appointment for it by phone.
