Mahana Estates

PLEASE NOTE: Mahana Cellar Door has closed for winter and will re-open in spring. The only vineyard situated in the stunning region of Mahana, Nelson, NZ. A fully organic winery which is producing wines that speak more about the place they are from. Elegant, cool climate Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling & Sauvignon Blanc.

This could just be the very best winery restaurant opportunity in the Nelson District NZ. We have visited this one several times and have never been disappointed with good or service. Wines great also. 2016 Rose is magical. Make sure u make a booking.

Mapua Ferry

Reviewed By GlobalVillage - Burlington, Vermont

Background: The bicycle ride from Nelson to Mapua (and return) follows the ocean shore and through farm land. While there are some Bridges to cross, the Mapua ferry is the only way to get to Mapua from Rabbit Island (and return).
Verdict: While a quick ride, on the return trip, we noticed that the Boat Captain returned the ferry from Mapua to Rabbit Island in order to pick up a young family who would otherwise have to wait for an hour or more. If we were to return to Mapua via bicycle, we'd obviously use the Mapua Ferry! There is a cafe nearby on Mapua if you arrive a few minutes early.

World of WearableArt & Classic Cars Museum

The World of WearableArt and Classic Cars Museum is an iconic Nelson visitor attraction that celebrates two passions united by design. Amazing Wearable works of Art from the annual WOW Awards Show are displayed alongside one of Australasia's biggest private collections of rare, Classic Cars. The Museum also includes a Cafe renowned for it's tasty, healthy treats, a Retail Store full of NZ art and jewelry designs, and the ever-changing Reflections Art Gallery. Open every day 10am - 5pm (except Christmas Day)

This place consists of two different and completely unrelated museums. One offers bizarre, other-worldly, and often zany costumes--literally wearable art, although one would not wear any of them in ordinary circumstances. The other is a collection of classic cars.
This combination was perfect for my spouse and me. I was entranced by the wearable art; he loved the classic cars.
To me, most of the cars were things I had seen before, at other car museums and exhibits that my spouse has dragged me to. If you like that sort of thing, you will love this, with specimens from the late nineteenth century up to the late twentieth century. All of them are in impeccable condition.
But for a genuinely unique experience, spend your time with the wearable art. It is simply impossible to describe in words the imagination that has produced these costumes. Some are witty; some are silly; some are scary; some are beautiful; most are very attention-grabbing; and most are made of materials not often used for people's clothes--including various metals, plastics, and wood, in addition to fabrics of all kinds.
There are also videos on rotation in a small theatre, which portray the history of the World of WearableArt competition, and showcase some of the designers.
This exhibit is, in my view, completely worth seeing. Be prepared to be blown away, and expect to spend at least a couple of hours here, if you want to soak in the details of the costumes.
The only disappointment was the gift store. I would have been willing to buy some sort of souvenir, but there was very little on offer.

Really enjoyed our tour around Ngarua Caves.
$20 each, tours start on the hour and you must be ready to go!
Our tour guide was great, spoke really well and had great information.
- Loved hearing about the Moa's and getting to hold a Moa bone!
- The Cave was made pitch black at one stage - which was amazing
- Our 3 year old loved it
- Our 1 year old got a bit scared and they turned back (Some babies/young kids would be fine, others like our little one was not so)
- There is a ladder to climb up at the end which would be a tight squeeze if you were a larger person...
Overall loved it and would do it again :D

Seifried Estate Winery & Vineyard

From the beautiful Waimea Plains come the inspired and innovative wines of the South Island's oldest family winery, Seifried Estate. Harvested from Estate grown, 'Sustainably Accredited' vineyards scattered throughout the Nelson region, this is a winery with a focus and passion for beautifully crafted wines. From humble beginnings in the Moutere Valley near Nelson in 1973, Seifried Estate has grown to become synonymous with sustainability, quality, innovation and family values. The family business has grown and now farms over 250 hectares of vines, with their wines being sold in 22 countries, including having established themselves as a familiar and favoured brand in New Zealand. A leading producer of Nelson Sauvignon Blanc, Seifried has also gained a reputation for interesting and unusual varieties, including Grüner Veltliner, Würzer and Zweigelt - paying homage to Hermann's Austrian heritage. In September 2014, Hermann and Agnes were acknowledged for their tremendous contribution to New Zealand wine and inducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers. They made history as the first husband and wife team to be recognised and it was also the first time a woman has been honoured. The passion has been passed on with all three of the Seifried "children" now home and working in the company. Each brings experience and knowledge gained in various roles around the world. The grandchildren have also become regulars at the winery, eager to help and get their hands (and feet!) dirty, and follow in "Opa and Nana's" footsteps. A family business, sharing their wines with the world. And home to the fabulous Sweet Agnes Riesling - New Zealand's most awarded dessert wine.

This is one of those really good wine tasting experiences - they have a wide range available and staff help you through it in a warm and friendly manner. We knew what we wanted so didn't do the full tasting, but found the staff very knowledgable and helpful. They also have a restaurant here for those wanting to stop for lunch.
