Ponta de Sao Lourenco

Reviewed By Lesterbeach - Winnipeg, Canada

There is a large parking lot but no washrooms. The trailhead is easy to spot behind the sign. The walk is quite desolate. There are no trees but lots of wildflowers. We walked halfway to Esperito which is quite a climb. The stairs are good but there are hundreds of them. There are some gorgeous lookout points where you can see the sea on both sides. It was rainy in Funchal but beautiful blue skies here.

Praia de Machico

The weather in Funchal was heavy cloud and heavy rain...so it was lovely to arrive at this pretty sandy beach in glorious Sunshine. It is a small bay just a couple of minutes walk away from the centre of Machico and quite self-contained, with wc and changing facilities, sun lounger hire and cafes just steps away.

Santo da Serra Golf Club

Over-looking the bay of Machico lies the Santo da Serra Golf Club. Its original course, built in 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones who created a spectacular 27 hole golf course in one of the most beautiful landscapes that nature may offer. The Machico and the DESERTAS courses are the ones usually played on the Madeira Island Open, while the SERRAS course, though slightly plain, maintains the same game level.

Very friendly staff, all very helpfull.
Course dry this time of year but the greens were quick and held a ball. Not a long course for the most part, but some long carries of the whites over ravines. Some holes abit 'iffy' as uphill all the way so difficult to judge, and they will test your fitness, especially if you choose to carry on a warm day. Enjoyed my 2 rounds there and if you want to play golf with great views this is a good one, wife walked with me on the 2nd round and enjoyed the views plus the clubhouse at the end.

This was a welcome refuge for a drink following the 11km walk from Ribeiro Frio on a warm (yes, there have been some of them) sunny day in May. The beer was cool, the company was relaxing, so what more can you ask?

I am happy that i finally did this adventure. Since i am afraid of heights i didn't really do all of them. I went back to boat and i had a good look at the rest. It was worth a visit. The boat ride on the way back just made my day... they made every single penny worth paying... if ever i am comfortable with heights... m gonna finish all the jumps... fingers cross

This lovely 15th Century Church is located right in the centre of Machico. The interior is stunning, with a beautiful painted ceiling and lovely Baroque gilt Altarpiece. I’ve visited European Churches with so much gilt decoration that it has sometimes been a bit overwhelming for me but this, offset by the whitewashed walls, was just lovely.

Levada do Castelejo

Reviewed By George647 - Preston, United Kingdom

This Levada is easy to access from Funchal on the 53 SAM bus to Faial. The bus stop is at Cruz outside a cafe. The walk is clearly signposted on the left side of the road. You have two options as the Levada splits. Our choice was the right hand fork and it proved to be a lovely 3 hour walk. 1 and 1/2 to the rocky outcrop at the end of the river bed and then returning on the same route. A delightful experience and an easy walks but take care as some of the hand rails are in a bad state of repair.
